The leak usually means a supply connection needs correction
Water on a washing machine supply hose most often points to a loose connection, damaged sealing washer, or deteriorated hose. It should not be dismissed: these hoses remain pressurized while their valves are open, so even a small active drip can continue and wet nearby finishes.
The observation does not automatically mean the washer has failed. The source still needs to be located before continued use.
Other water can look like a hose leak
A wet hose may be carrying water from somewhere else. The shutoff valve or washer inlet can leak above the connection. A split drain hose or overflowing standpipe can also wet the area while the machine drains.
Condensation and a dry mineral track can resemble leakage. Neither proves an active leak. A dry connection also cannot rule out leakage during filling or draining.
What the report can establish
A report can identify visible moisture, staining, corrosion, hose damage, and the apparent origin at that moment. It cannot date the condition or confirm concealed moisture.
How the source is narrowed down
Dry the area and watch where fresh water returns. Check the hose body and both ends for holes, cracks, kinks, damaged connectors, or droplets. Appliance guidance also calls for checking the O-rings and connected components.
Whether an inspector operates the washer or its valves depends on the agreement, local requirements, accessibility, and risk. InterNACHI’s Standards of Practice require reporting observed active plumbing leaks, but do not require inspection of clothes washers or their connections. The inspection is visual and limited to readily accessible conditions.
Urgency and the practical next step
An active supply-hose leak deserves prompt attention. Stop using the washer and close its accessible water-supply valves if that can be done safely. Water near an outlet, damaged cord, or energized appliance raises an electrical concern; avoid the wet area and obtain qualified help.
If water appears at the valve, inside the appliance, beneath flooring, or from a backing-up standpipe, a plumber or appliance technician may need to isolate the cause. After correction, observe the relevant fill or drain cycle and check for remaining moisture.
