The cost range
As of July 2026, budget about $100 to $1,000 for many return-air repairs, with roughly $200 to $750 to add one return vent. The biggest variables are the actual defect, duct accessibility, and how much ductwork or finished wall must change. Extensive redesign or replacement can exceed $1,000.
“Return air” means air moving from living spaces back to the central heating or cooling equipment. A return-air problem can therefore mean several different things: a damaged grille, a loose or leaking duct, a blocked path, or inadequate return capacity. Those are not interchangeable repairs.
What different repair scopes may cost
The figures below combine two national cost guides updated in 2025 and 2026. They are budgeting ranges, not fixed rates.

The apparent overlap is intentional. A $250 job could be a substantial vent repair or the simplest end of a duct replacement. Diagnosis determines which range applies.
The estimate should name the airflow problem
“Improve return air” is not a complete scope. Ask what was measured or observed, which return path is affected, and whether the proposal repairs leakage, removes a restriction, adds capacity, or replaces damaged ductwork.
What changes the price most
Access and finish work often move the quote first. Exposed basement ductwork is generally easier to reach than a return hidden above a ceiling, inside a wall, or in a cramped attic or crawl space. Cutting and restoring drywall, paint, flooring, or cabinetry may be separate line items.
Repair size and material matter next. Refastening one loose joint takes less material and labor than fabricating a larger sheet-metal return or replacing a collapsed run. A new return also needs a suitable route from the grille to the existing system.
Testing and system design can change both the diagnosis and solution. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Science Education program explains that air must return to central equipment for reheating or cooling, and that homes may use central returns, dedicated returns, transfer grilles, jump ducts, or door undercuts. Simply adding a grille does not establish that the complete return path is correctly sized.
Location also matters. Labor rates, permit requirements, housing construction, and travel costs vary by market. Get a written local estimate when the work involves concealed ducts or system redesign.
What a useful estimate includes
A clear proposal should identify the affected return, repair method, materials, labor, and any testing included. It should also state whether wall opening and finish restoration, permits, disposal, insulation, or balancing are included or excluded.
Return leaks deserve a defined repair rather than cosmetic treatment. Department of Energy guidance says return ducts must be air sealed and notes that poorly sealed returns in unconditioned spaces can draw contaminants into the system. If the cause or required capacity is unclear, a qualified HVAC evaluation is a reasonable next step before authorizing construction.
