It was the larger of the two tornadoes that formed that evening. Residents near the tornado reported hail the size of a quarter before the tornado arrived, then hearing a "freight train" type of sound as it touched down. It damaged boats and trailers in the Lake Amistad area, then passed across rural subdivisions, damaging several mobile homes and houses and injuring nearly two dozen people. Two people in a pop-up trailer were injured shortly afterward as a strong thunderstorm gust blew the trailer into a tree. A second tornado was spotted shortly afterward behind the mall. The two tornadoes knocked down about a dozen power poles.
