Hail Report Description: Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced flash flooding, severe straight-line winds, hail as large as softballs, and 13 tornados as they moved across western North Texas. The first six tornados were spawned by a single storm as it moved across Hardeman County and into western Wilbarger County. The first five of these six tornados occurred south of Chillicothe in Hardeman County and spotters reported that each tornado was a brief F0 causing no damage. The sixth tornado, located 10 miles west of Vernon in Wilbarger County, was multi-vortex in structure; however, no damage was reported and this tornado was also rated as F0. The seventh and eighth tornados occurred simultaneously at 1900 CST with separate storms five miles northwest of Burkburnett and seven miles east of Electra in Wichita County. No damage was reported and both were rated as F0. The nineth through thirteenth tornados occurred as the storms continued to move eastward across Wichita County. The nineth tornado was spotted nine miles west of Iowa Park. The 10th tornado touched down near the A/C Delco plant south of Burkburnett, slightly damaging roofs in the area. The eleventh tornado was reported east of Burkburnett. The 12th and 13th tornados were spotted six miles west of Burkburnett and just west of Burkburnett respectively. Once again, no significant damage occurred with any of the tornados and all were rated as F0. In addition to the tornados, severe thunderstorm winds reached 85 mph at Shepherd Air Force Base in Wichita County. Softball-size hail was reported eight miles north of Crowell in Foard County, 13 miles south of Quanah in Hardeman County, and 10 miles northwest of Vernon in Wilbarger County. Flash flooding began in Vernon in Wilbarger County at 1900 CST, when Highway 283 north of town was under water and some flooding of streets and homes was reported on the southwest side of Vernon. Later, at 2050 CST, Highway 283 south of town was closed, Highway 70 to Crowell was closed, and one foot of water covered some roads in Vernon.

The tornado blew three-quarters of the roof off one brick home and parts of the roof off another. A tractor-semitrailer was blown over, trees were uprooted, and a wellhouse was destroyed. From spotter and damage reports, the tornado was rated as F2. Damage across northern Oklahoma was also caused by severe straight-line winds, particularly in Woods County. Four miles southwest of Plainview a mobile home was destroyed, injuring the occupant. Tree limbs as large as eight-inch-diameter were also downed in the area. In Waynoka three-inch limbs were downed, and 17 miles southeast of Waynoka trees were downed. In Harper County 14 miles east-southeast of Buffalo another man was injured when his mobile home was overturned by severe thunderstorm winds. In Garfield County one mile east of Breckinridge a shed was blown onto a highway. Hail as large as golf balls fell in Shattuck in Ellis County, two miles north of Jet in Alfalfa County, two miles west of Durham in Roger Mills County, and 11 miles south-southwest of Woodward in Woodward County. Flash flooding was reported in Woods County where water was reported over many roads, including one foot of water over U.S. 64 four miles east of Alva and six inches of water over U.S. 281 north of Hopeton. In Kingfisher County four miles east of Kingfisher, five feet of water covered SH 33 at an underpass with eight inches covering the road elsewhere. In Alfalfa County water covered numerous county roads southwest of Cherokee, and in Garfield County water covered several roads south of Enid. In Woods County in Dacoma, lightning struck a house, blasting a hole in the roof. Fortunately the rain quickly extinguished the resulting fire.

Hail Damage Risk for Your Home+
Hail reports describe hail by diameter, often comparing stone size to familiar objects like peas, quarters, golf balls, and softballs. Use this guide as a starting point for possible hail damage to your roof, siding, gutters, vents, windows, and exterior. Actual hail damage depends on hail hardness, density, wind speed, impact angle, roof age, shingle condition, roof pitch, roofing material, installation quality, and prior storm damage.
Pea
0.25″
Low
Usually too small to cause hail damage to most sound asphalt roofs, siding, or gutters.
Mothball
0.50″
Sub-Severe Watch
Below the NWS severe-hail threshold, but not always harmless. Repeated small hail can scuff surfaces, wear aging shingles, and loosen protective granules over time.
Penny
0.75″
Minor / Watch
Below the NWS severe-hail threshold, but roof hail damage is still possible on older, brittle, poorly installed, or previously damaged shingles. May also mark screens, vents, gutters, and soft metal.
Nickel
0.88″
Minor / Watch
Still below the severe-hail threshold, but large enough to leave visible marks on soft metal and add wear to older or hail-weakened roof shingles.
Quarter
1.00″
Watch
The NWS severe-hail threshold. Quarter-size hail can bruise shingles, dent soft metal, and create roof hail damage worth checking.
Half Dollar
1.25″
Watch
More likely to dent gutters, vents, flashing, and siding. Hail damage risk rises quickly on older roofs or hail-weakened shingles.
Ping Pong / Walnut
1.50″
Likely
Hail damage becomes more likely, including bruised shingles, granule loss, dented siding, and damaged roof vents.
Golf Ball
1.75″
Likely
Often causes roof hail damage, cracked shingles, dented gutters, damaged flashing, and siding impacts. A roof inspection is recommended.
Hen Egg
2.00″
Serious
Can crack or puncture shingles, expose mat, dent siding, and cause widespread hail damage across the roof and exterior.
Tennis Ball
2.50″
Serious
Can cause heavy roof hail damage, punctured siding, broken skylights, damaged vents, and widespread exterior damage.
Baseball
2.75″
Major
Major hail damage is likely, including severe roof impacts, damaged siding, broken windows, and possible major roof repairs.
Tea Cup / Large Apple
3.00″
Major
Can cause heavy hail damage across the roof, siding, gutters, windows, and exterior. Significant repairs are often needed.
Softball
4.00″
Extreme
Destructive hail damage. Can severely damage roofing materials, siding, windows, gutters, vents, vehicles, and exterior surfaces.
Grapefruit
4.50″
Extreme
Catastrophic hail damage risk for roofs, windows, vehicles, siding, gutters, and exterior surfaces.
Source: NOAA / National Weather Service hail size references are used for hail-size comparisons and the 1.00″ severe-hail threshold. Damage descriptions are general homeowner guidance, not official NOAA/NWS damage ratings. Sub-severe hail under 1.00″ is below the severe threshold, but that does not mean “no roof damage.” Penny- to nickel-size hail can still contribute to granule loss, cosmetic surface marks, and added wear, especially on older, brittle, poorly installed, or previously damaged roofs.

Wind Report Description: A line of severe thunderstorms produced a 15 mile long swath of wind damage from five miles southwest of Camdenton in the town of Roach to the town of Montreal. In Roach the winds rolled over a mobile home producing about $10 thousand damage to the mobile home and its contents. Several occupants were inside the mobile home but no injuries were reported. Similar damage occurred on the southeast side of Montreal along Highway 7 where another mobile home was blown over and also suffered around $10 thousand damage. Two adults and a young teenager inside the mobile home received minor injuries. Two other mobile homes at the same residence park had part of their roof blown off. At a nearby farm the strong winds pushed a turkey building three feet off of its foundation. Other structural damage in Roach and Montreal was limited to shingles and bent television antennas. Downed trees and broken large tree limbs were widespread along the path of wind damage. In some case tree damage was scattered one to two miles wide along the path, particularly in the vicinity of Montreal. The damage was most concentrated on hill tops due to the roughness of the terrain.

Wind Report Description: Severe thunderstorms developed in northeast Oklahoma during the morning of June 9th. The storms produced a total of two tornadoes, as well as large hail and damaging winds. The first tornado touched down briefly in the town of Shamrock at 0625 CST. The tornado damaged several buildings in Shamrock, and one woman was injured when her mobile home was overturned by the tornado. Trees were also uprooted by this F0 tornado. The second tornado touched down briefly just south of Olive at 0630 CST. No damage occurred with this F0 tornado. Strong straight-line winds destroyed a barn and downed trees three miles southeast of Shamrock, and strong winds near Bristow moved a mobile home three feet off its foundation. Strong thunderstorm winds damaged several roofs and two barns four miles north of Bristow, and cattle feeders were blown over the road in the same area. Strong winds damaged buildings and downed trees in Sand Springs, and trees were also blown down in the western part of the city of Tulsa along Charles Page Boulevard between 61st Street West and 81st Street West. Large tree limbs were blown onto power lines in Hominy, and thunderstorm winds gusted to 60 mph six miles south of Kellyville. Quarter-size hail fell six miles northwest of Sapulpa, five miles southwest of Sand Springs on the Tulsa/Creek County line, and two miles south of Sand Springs. Dime- to quarter-size hail fell two miles east of Sand Springs, and dime-size hail fell six miles south of Kellyville.

Tornado Damage Risk for Your Home+
After a tornado, the National Weather Service assigns an EF rating from EF0 to EF5 based on surveyed damage. The rating estimates wind speed from what the tornado damaged, so actual damage can vary by construction quality, roof age, garage doors, windows, trees, debris, and how close the home was to the tornado path.
EF0
65–85 mph
Light
Can peel shingles, damage gutters or siding, break tree limbs, and toss loose outdoor items.
EF1
86–110 mph
Moderate
Can strip roof covering, damage exterior doors, break windows, snap trees, and cause heavier siding or gutter damage.
EF2
111–135 mph
Serious
Can tear off large sections of roofing, break or uproot trees, destroy weaker structures, and cause major exterior damage.
EF3–EF5
136+ mph
Severe
Can remove roofs and walls, destroy large portions of homes, toss vehicles, and cause severe to total destruction near the path.
Source: NOAA / National Weather Service. EF ratings are assigned after a post-storm damage survey and are based on observed damage, not a direct measurement at every home.

Get a Remote Hail Inspection
Not sure if hail may have affected your home on June 9, 1995? Ask a local pro for a Remote Hail Inspection. They can review hail activity for your property and help you decide whether an in-person roof or exterior inspection makes sense.
How many storm reports were recorded on June 9, 1995?
Our records show 94 hail, 116 wind, and 31 tornado reports on June 9, 1995, compiled from NOAA SPC and NWS Local Storm Reports. The most recent was reported on June 9, 1995.
What was the largest hail reported on June 9, 1995?
The largest hail size in these storm-report records on June 9, 1995 is 4.50″, reported near NW Vernon, TX.
Some reports show UNK instead of a wind speed or tornado rating — what does that mean?
Wind reports come three ways: measured from an instrument, estimated from the damage observed, or UNK when no speed was recorded. Tornadoes show UNK until the National Weather Service finishes a damage survey and assigns an EF rating. UNK simply means that value was not available when the report was filed.
A report appeared near my home on June 9, 1995 — is my roof damaged?
Not necessarily. A storm report shows that hail, wind, or a tornado was observed nearby, not that any specific home was hit. To find out whether your property was affected, check an address-level hail report, and if it looks significant, ask a local pro about a Remote Hail Inspection before scheduling roof work.
I am buying or selling a home — how do these on June 9, 1995 reports help?
If a storm passed through, a roof or exterior may have damage that is hard to see, or a recent repair may trace back to it. Buyers can ask better questions before closing, and sellers can document the home condition up front — both starting from the property address rather than a whole region.
How do I check what happened at a specific address on June 9, 1995?
Use the address search to pull a free address-level hail report for any property — no phone number or email required. It shows recent hail activity for that address so you know whether a closer roof or exterior review makes sense.
Where does this storm report data come from, and what are its limits?
Storm reports on this page are public reports from storm events on June 9, 1995 across the United States, sourced from NOAA SPC and NWS Local Storm Reports. They show where hail, wind, or tornado activity was reported, but they do not confirm damage at any specific property. Report locations, sizes, and times may be approximate and can vary from what an individual home experienced. For property-specific hail history, use an address-level hail report or contact a participating local professional for a remote hail inspection. Pros inclusion is not an endorsement, and contacting a professional does not confirm damage at any property.
