Hail Damage Risk for Your Home+
Hail reports describe hail by diameter, often comparing stone size to familiar objects like peas, quarters, golf balls, and softballs. Use this guide as a starting point for possible hail damage to your roof, siding, gutters, vents, windows, and exterior. Actual hail damage depends on hail hardness, density, wind speed, impact angle, roof age, shingle condition, roof pitch, roofing material, installation quality, and prior storm damage.
Pea
0.25″
Low
Usually too small to cause hail damage to most sound asphalt roofs, siding, or gutters.
Mothball
0.50″
Sub-Severe Watch
Below the NWS severe-hail threshold, but not always harmless. Repeated small hail can scuff surfaces, wear aging shingles, and loosen protective granules over time.
Penny
0.75″
Minor / Watch
Below the NWS severe-hail threshold, but roof hail damage is still possible on older, brittle, poorly installed, or previously damaged shingles. May also mark screens, vents, gutters, and soft metal.
Nickel
0.88″
Minor / Watch
Still below the severe-hail threshold, but large enough to leave visible marks on soft metal and add wear to older or hail-weakened roof shingles.
Quarter
1.00″
Watch
The NWS severe-hail threshold. Quarter-size hail can bruise shingles, dent soft metal, and create roof hail damage worth checking.
Half Dollar
1.25″
Watch
More likely to dent gutters, vents, flashing, and siding. Hail damage risk rises quickly on older roofs or hail-weakened shingles.
Ping Pong / Walnut
1.50″
Likely
Hail damage becomes more likely, including bruised shingles, granule loss, dented siding, and damaged roof vents.
Golf Ball
1.75″
Likely
Often causes roof hail damage, cracked shingles, dented gutters, damaged flashing, and siding impacts. A roof inspection is recommended.
Hen Egg
2.00″
Serious
Can crack or puncture shingles, expose mat, dent siding, and cause widespread hail damage across the roof and exterior.
Tennis Ball
2.50″
Serious
Can cause heavy roof hail damage, punctured siding, broken skylights, damaged vents, and widespread exterior damage.
Baseball
2.75″
Major
Major hail damage is likely, including severe roof impacts, damaged siding, broken windows, and possible major roof repairs.
Tea Cup / Large Apple
3.00″
Major
Can cause heavy hail damage across the roof, siding, gutters, windows, and exterior. Significant repairs are often needed.
Softball
4.00″
Extreme
Destructive hail damage. Can severely damage roofing materials, siding, windows, gutters, vents, vehicles, and exterior surfaces.
Grapefruit
4.50″
Extreme
Catastrophic hail damage risk for roofs, windows, vehicles, siding, gutters, and exterior surfaces.
Source: NOAA / National Weather Service hail size references are used for hail-size comparisons and the 1.00″ severe-hail threshold. Damage descriptions are general homeowner guidance, not official NOAA/NWS damage ratings. Sub-severe hail under 1.00″ is below the severe threshold, but that does not mean “no roof damage.” Penny- to nickel-size hail can still contribute to granule loss, cosmetic surface marks, and added wear, especially on older, brittle, poorly installed, or previously damaged roofs.

Wind Report Description: A line of severe thunderstorms roared south from Ontario and Michigan across Lake Erie at 50 mph. The strong winds rushed out ahead of the thunderstorms and despite the issuance of a special marine warning many boaters were caught by surprise. The Coast Guard received 152 calls for assistance and had to fish many people out of the lake as dozens of boats capsized or were destroyed on the rocks. One fatality occurred when a 28-year-old man capsized off Lorain and suffered broken bones and other injuries. He was hospitalized but died several days later. One couple spent almost eight hours in the water after their boat capsized near Kelleys Island. They were spotted about 0200 by Coast Guard search helicopter and had to be treated for hypothermia. The other injuries were hypothermia or cuts and bruises. M28BO

Wind Report Description: A powerfull line of thunderstorms swept across southeast Michigan from northwest to southeast late in the afternoon on the 13th. An 18-year-old man was killed near Harbor Beach in Huron County when a barn that he was working in collapsed. A 50-year-old man suffered a broken leg when a tree limb fell on him near Croswell, in Sanilac County. The strong winds produced widespread power outages. Detroit Edison reported that 410,000 customers lost power in southeast Michigan due to the storm, which was the highest total for any storm since July, 1991. In addition, the winds produced widespread damage to trees and man-made structures. A State Farm Insurance Agent estimated that total damage claims of over $2 million would be filed. AAA Michigan expected to recieve claims from homeowners of over $3 million. The United States Coast Guard received dozens of distress calls as the storms moved across lakes Huron, Saint Clair and Erie, but no injuries or deaths were reported. (M18BU).

Wind Report Description: A line of severe thunderstorms (a derecho) roared south from Ontario and Michigan across Lake Erie and on shore at 50 mph crossing all of northern Ohio except the extreme northwest counties. Widespread wind damage occurred as winds gusted to 70 mph in many areas. Local wind gusts reached nearly 100 mph. Winds were measured at 88 mph in Avon (Lorain County) and Tiffin (Seneca), 87 mph in Stow (Summit), and estimated at 90 mph in western Geauga County. Numerous trees and limbs were downed, some on power lines, vehicles, and structures. It took days for some communities to clear the downed trees. Electricity was out in many areas into Friday morning, the 14th. A few areas went without power up to five days which caused the loss of food and other items requiring cooling as well as a serious inconvenience due to the ongoing heat wave. The roof was blown off an apartment complex in Elyria (Lorain County). The roof of a home in Ruggles Township (Ashland) was partially blown off. A 2,400 square foot roof of a farm building was blown off in Tully Township (Marion) and the roof was blown from a lumber yard in Mansfield (Richland). The shell of a church under construction was destroyed in Euclid (Cuyahoga). A barn was blown over in Oak Harbor (Ottawa) and the roof was blown from two barns in Holmes County where a silo was also blown over. The wall of a warehouse in Canton (Stark) was blown over and a wall was blown out of the Sinclair City Building in Myers Lake Village (Stark). Crop damage occurred in a number of areas, mainly from corn and other standing crops being blown down. A 37-year-old man was killed in Guilford Township (Medina) at a campground when a two foot diameter tree crashed through an outbuilding and struck him in the head. The nine other people in the building had hardly a scratch. A 71-year-old Franklin Township (Ashland) man was killed when struck by a falling tree while he was on his riding mower. Two other injuries were reported in Seville (Medina) from people struck by falling trees. A 28-year-man was injured when his truck struck a tree that was blown down in front of him on Sandusky County Road 175. Several people were in vehicles crushed by falling trees including a police officer in Elyria (Lorain) but were not injured. M37CA M71OU

Damage to property was not nearly as extensive nor pronounced. There were a few reports of roof damage due to falling trees. Trees also fell on and damaged a few vehicles, including a sport utility vehicle and tractor seven miles northwest of West Branch. Roscommon County · 20,299 Homes in County
Wind Report Description: Thunderstorm winds did widespread tree damage across all but extreme southeast Roscommon County, with well over 100,000 trees down. Most of the trees brought down were the largest and healthiest, as they had the highest tops and heaviest foliage. Widespread damage to residences, cottages, garages, vehicles was caused by falling trees, while the winds damaged and destroyed docks and boats on the lee shores of all county lakes. Consumers Power Company estimated over 100 miles of phone and power lines down in the county and electrical service remained out to thousands of homes and cottages for periods ranging from a few days to over a week. Average wind gusts in most areas were estimated in the 65 to 80 mph range which is consistent with the reports from the Lyon Twp supervisor using a calibrated anemometer. Near catastrophic damage was done by unusually intense microbursts in three areas, where wind gusts were estimated in the 85 to 100 mph range: the Flag Point area (worst localized damage) on the east shore of Higgins Lake, Comfort and Detroit Points, on the west shore of Higgins Lake, and the communities of Artesia Beach and St. Helen, along the south and southeast shores of Lake St.Helen. An 11-year old female, accompanied by four other family members, was killed when the pontoon boat she was in flipped while returning to its dock; she became trapped under the craft and rescue efforts were delayed by blocked roads in the area. (F11O) A man and wife, riding ORV trails east of the community of St. Helen, were stranded by trees brought down by thunderstorm winds. Subsequently, the man suffered a heart attack. Because of the blocked trails, the wife was forced to walk several miles to a local cottage to obtain assistance. Rescue efforts were hampered by hundreds of downed trees blocking trails, and local residents assisted with chain saws to get the EMT vehicle back to the husband, who was dead when they arrived. Wind Report Description: Several trees were blown down. For the second morning in a row, a large complex of severe thunderstorms formed over the western Dakotas in the evening and moved into northeast Minnesota early the following morning. Again, this was primarily a wind event, with no reports of large hail or tornadoes. One man was killed when lightning struck the tree he was standing under. Thunderstorm wind gusts as high as 70 kts (80 mph) were observed as the squall line moved through the region. Many trees and power lines were blown down, causing extensive and widespread power and cable TV outages. Wind damage to boats, vehicles, buildings, and antennas also occurred, either directly or by falling trees. The hardest hit area extended from around Brainarrowrowd in Crow Wing County to near Grand Rapids in Itasca County, then northeast across the Iron Range of central St. Louis County, including the cities of Hibbing, Virginia, and Aurora. In some communities, trucks with plows were needed to clear roads made impassable by fallen trees. Thousands of electric customers were without power for at least 24 hours following the storm. The general manager for the Hibbing Public Utilities said it was the worst windstorm in at least 10 years. Other damage in Hibbing included construction signs and portable toilets that were tipped over. A fabric storage building was lifted by the wind, and an awning was ripped off the Pella Windows store. Trees touching power lines caused a few small fires. Other nearby communities suffering large numbers of downed trees and power outages were Kelly Lake, Chisholm, Nashwauk, Keewatin, and Leetonia. In Grand Rapids, power to half the city was out for hours and hundreds of power lines were down. Highway 169 south of the city was completely blocked by fallen trees. In Virginia, the Boyer True Value Hardware and Lumber store lost the roof from one of its buildings.

Wind Report Description: Trees up to four and one-half feet in diameter were blown down in Clay and Becker Counties. Numerous roofs blown off houses in the town of Hawley in Clay County. Tree damage was extensive at the Hawley golf course. Five boy scouts camping in tents and cabins at Many Point Lake Scout Camp near Ponsford were injured by falling trees. Two barns were destroyed at a chicken farm near Lake Park. Some homes were without electricity for up to a week. Over one thousand trees blown down at Itasca State Park in southern Clearwater County. One camper injured when a tree fell on her tent. Large trees down in Clarissa, Eagle Bend and Browerville areas of Todd County. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) estimated nearly 129,000 total acres of timber were destroyed by the storms of July 12-14. This estimate was based partly on aerial photography. The area of downed trees extended primarily across southern Clearwater, southeast Mahnomen, northwest Hubbard and northern Becker Counties. The DNR estimated that 5.2 million trees were blown down, tipped over or broken off. The appraised value of the timber lost or damaged was estimated at $15.5 million . This amount of timber would have been worth about a third of a billion dollars after having been cut, milled, sold and made into finished products. Only about half of the timber damaged was expected to be salvaged.

Tornado Damage Risk for Your Home+
After a tornado, the National Weather Service assigns an EF rating from EF0 to EF5 based on surveyed damage. The rating estimates wind speed from what the tornado damaged, so actual damage can vary by construction quality, roof age, garage doors, windows, trees, debris, and how close the home was to the tornado path.
EF0
65–85 mph
Light
Can peel shingles, damage gutters or siding, break tree limbs, and toss loose outdoor items.
EF1
86–110 mph
Moderate
Can strip roof covering, damage exterior doors, break windows, snap trees, and cause heavier siding or gutter damage.
EF2
111–135 mph
Serious
Can tear off large sections of roofing, break or uproot trees, destroy weaker structures, and cause major exterior damage.
EF3–EF5
136+ mph
Severe
Can remove roofs and walls, destroy large portions of homes, toss vehicles, and cause severe to total destruction near the path.
Source: NOAA / National Weather Service. EF ratings are assigned after a post-storm damage survey and are based on observed damage, not a direct measurement at every home.

Get a Remote Hail Inspection
Not sure if hail may have affected your home on July 13, 1995? Ask a local pro for a Remote Hail Inspection. They can review hail activity for your property and help you decide whether an in-person roof or exterior inspection makes sense.
How many storm reports were recorded on July 13, 1995?
Our records show 24 hail, 271 wind, and 9 tornado reports on July 13, 1995, compiled from NOAA SPC and NWS Local Storm Reports. The most recent was reported on July 13, 1995.
What was the largest hail reported on July 13, 1995?
The largest hail size in these storm-report records on July 13, 1995 is 1.75″, reported near W Grayling, MI.
Some reports show UNK instead of a wind speed or tornado rating — what does that mean?
Wind reports come three ways: measured from an instrument, estimated from the damage observed, or UNK when no speed was recorded. Tornadoes show UNK until the National Weather Service finishes a damage survey and assigns an EF rating. UNK simply means that value was not available when the report was filed.
A report appeared near my home on July 13, 1995 — is my roof damaged?
Not necessarily. A storm report shows that hail, wind, or a tornado was observed nearby, not that any specific home was hit. To find out whether your property was affected, check an address-level hail report, and if it looks significant, ask a local pro about a Remote Hail Inspection before scheduling roof work.
I am buying or selling a home — how do these on July 13, 1995 reports help?
If a storm passed through, a roof or exterior may have damage that is hard to see, or a recent repair may trace back to it. Buyers can ask better questions before closing, and sellers can document the home condition up front — both starting from the property address rather than a whole region.
How do I check what happened at a specific address on July 13, 1995?
Use the address search to pull a free address-level hail report for any property — no phone number or email required. It shows recent hail activity for that address so you know whether a closer roof or exterior review makes sense.
Where does this storm report data come from, and what are its limits?
Storm reports on this page are public reports from storm events on July 13, 1995 across the United States, sourced from NOAA SPC and NWS Local Storm Reports. They show where hail, wind, or tornado activity was reported, but they do not confirm damage at any specific property. Report locations, sizes, and times may be approximate and can vary from what an individual home experienced. For property-specific hail history, use an address-level hail report or contact a participating local professional for a remote hail inspection. Pros inclusion is not an endorsement, and contacting a professional does not confirm damage at any property.
