But then it became severe and produced 3/4 inch diameter hail just to the southeast of La Junta, and a 58 mph wind gust at Cheraw in northeast Otero county. There was no known damage in Cheraw.

Wind Report Description: A large gravity-feed wagon was tipped over and damaged, several trees in a nearby shelter belt were uprooted, hay bales were rolled, unravelled and strewn over 1/2 mile and about 700 feet of fence and trees were damaged. Two small unsecured sheds were rolled onto their sides. Within a mile of this damage site at a nearby farm, a roof of a large outbuilding was partially removed, an untied trailer home was rolled over by the wind and damaged. Approximately, 600 to 1000 acres of sunflowers were flattened and power lines were downed.

Tornado Report Description: A line of thunderstorms moving east through western Bent county merged with a northeast moving supercell thunderstorm just west of Las Animas. The hail quickly grew from one inch in diameter up to 4.50 inches in diameter. A tornado and high winds skipped across the landscape for about 8 miles from about 3 miles west northwest of Las Animas through ranch country of north central Bent county. Windows were broken and roofs were destroyed on houses, outbuilding were damaged and destroyed, and vehicles were damaged and destroyed by both the high winds and hail.

Tornado Report Description: The same supercell thunderstorm which spawned a tornado in southeast Otero county in the Higbee Valley dropped a brief, weak tornado west southwest of Las Animas in a ranch land area. Grass was laid down, but there was no known property or crop damage. Knowledge of this and other supercell tornadic thunderstorms moving east of La Junta prompted law enforcement to stop an eastbound Amtrak train and evacuate the 300 passengers around 9:00 p.m. The train was allowed to travel on to Chicago around 11:00 p.m.

Tornado Report Description: Another supercell thunderstorm brought large hail and a tornado to southeast Otero county. The storm and accompanying tornado moved out of open country southwest of the Higbee Valley and struck several ranches just north of the Purgatoire River on Road 804. At about 8:45 p.m. the tornado struck three ranches about 3 miles southwest of Higbee. Some barns were destroyed, and roofs were ripped off others. Horse trailers, windmills, feed troughs, hay feeders, water tanks, grain storage bins were destroyed. Many large cottonwood trees were broken off or uprooted. The tornado ripped through the northwest side of Higbee, and one horse perished from injuries due to flying debris there. The tornado then moved northeast through open ranch country for another 5 miles, with the only known damage being two downed power poles.
