Tornado Report Description: MULTIPLE TREES AND POWERLINES REPORTED DOWN. MULTIPLE INJURIES ALSO REPORTED.

Tornado Report Description: A tornado touched down in the Ider community of eastern DeKalb County, Alabama. The tornado first touched down along County Road 783. Numerous hardwood trees were snapped and uprooted. A small outbuilding was damaged near the intersection of County road 776. The tornado then tracked just north of County Road 776 before intersecting County Road 788. ||Damage to trees was fairly widespread in this area. Several homes or buildings also received minor roof or structural damage. The tornado reached its maximum intensity just west of Alabama Highway 75. One home there sustained significant roof damage with the majority of the roof removed. An anchored outbuilding was destroyed and several over homes sustained minor damage. Also, a power pole was snapped off and many large hardwood trees were snapped about 20 feet above the ground. ||The tornado then crossed Alabama Highway 75, snapping and uprooting trees along both sides of the road. The tornado began to weaken as it moved east-southeast, crossing County Road 372. Very minor roof damage was noted to a home and a few trees were uprooted. The tornado then dissipated on the east side of County Road 791 in the Cartersville, Alabama community after uprooting a few trees on the eastern slopes of Sand Mountain.

Tornado Report Description: A storm survey determined that a weak tornado touched down in the Fyffe, Alabama, community just east of the intersection of County road 545 and County Road 50. A few softwood trees were uprooted on the north side of the road. The tornado then moved east, crossing County Road 50 briefly, and uprooting some trees along County Road 536. The tornado then nearly paralleled County Road 50, destroying a large hay barn just east of County Road 528. The winds within the tornado along County Road 528 were estimated at around 85 mph with a narrow path of 30 yards. The tornado finally lifted west of County Road 539 after downing a few more trees.

Tornado Report Description: Damage was first noted just south of Bird Dog Trail at the southern end of a large farmstead. Numerous trees were snapped and uprooted and a large 40 by 50 feet barn was destroyed. This brief tornado appeared to be at its peak intensity near this location with estimated winds of 100 mph. It should be noted that the barn damage was cleaned up at the time of the survey, but the homeowner confirmed the barn had totally collapsed. Several trees were snapped adjacent to the west side of a house which had no major damage. The short lived tornado moved northeast with additional trees snapped or uprooted just across Bird Dog Trail (north side). Two by fours and tin from the barn was seen here on the ground and in the trees. The homeowner also noted that tin from the barn was seen here on the ground and in the trees. The homeowner also noted that tin from the barn roof was tossed to at least the end of the tree line, which is approximately 1/3 of a mile away. The tornado then crossed a rural/forested area to the intersection of Pumpkin Center Road and CR 153/Fletcher Road. Small to medium sized branches were brought down at the southwest corner of this intersection. No additional damage was seen downstream from this location but very limited road access existed.

Tornado Report Description: A tornado touched down south of Mentone along the Desoto Parkway (CR 89) just south of the intersection with CR 165. Here, several large cedar trees were snapped. The tornado moved northeast, paralleling the western side of CR 165. Mainly tree damage was noted in this area, with minor structural damage to barns and outbuildings. Several stands of old growth hardwoods were damaged here.||The tornado seemed to weaken briefly with only minor tree damage noted near downtown Mentone. Further up the slopes of Lookout Mountain, the tornado strengthened again to EF-1 intensity with speeds up to 105 mph, with sporadic swaths of hardwood trees snapped or uprooted, all along the eastern side of CR 89, before lifting just inside the state line.

Tornado Report Description: A small tornado touched down in the Aroney community in the southwest corner of DeKalb County. The tornado first touched down along County Road (CR) 479. Here, minor roof damage was noted to a single family home, and a farm building was also damaged. Minor damage was also noted to trees all along CR 479. Several small hardwood trees were snapped just north of CR 10, and other trees had the tops snapped off in this area. Another barn sustained minor roof damage further north along the road, and a home sustained very minor damage. The tornado eventually lifted just south of Highway 168 near the Kilpatrick Community.

Tornado Report Description: A tornadic cyclic supercell produced yet another tornado along County Road (CR) 209 where mainly branches were snapped. The tornado lifted northeast snapping additional branches before strengthening as it approached CR 52. Here, severe hardwood trees were snapped or uprooted near a farmstead. Additional trees were snapped and/or uprooted along a wide swath all along CR 88. The tornado may have weakened or even lifted very briefly as it crossed the Highway 35 intersection near Dugout Valley Road/CR 97 west-norhtwest of Fort Payne. The tornado intensified once again as it tracked norhteast, uprooting and snapping more trees. The tornado reached peak intensity with estimated winds of 115 mph and a path width of 200 yards near the intersection with Chisenhall Road. At this location, the tornado rolled and separated a mobile home from its frame, peeled roofing back from another mobile home, and snapped many trees in a forested area just northeast of the intersection. It continued to track along CR 97, but weakened significantly, causing mostly tree damage or very minor structural damage to single family homes (two homes sustained minor roof damage or broken windows just north of the Chisenhall/CR 97 intersection). The tornado narrowed significantly before lifting along CR 609 just north of the intersection with CR 27.

Tornado Report Description: A tornadic cyclic supercell produced another tornado in the community of Dawson along County Road (CR) 20. Numerous trees were snapped and/or uprooted in this area. The tornado tracked north-northeast snapping additional trees along CR 199, and damaging a mobile home. Another home received minor structural damage along CR 196. The tornado fell a wide swath of trees before it crossed Highway 57. Here it reached maximum intensity (EF-2) with winds of 115 mph, nearly destroying a small home. Several large farm buildings were significantly damaged near the intersection of CR 204 and 57. The tornado nearly paralleled the highway as it tracked further north. Another home sustained roof damage along CR 57 as well. The tornado began a weakening phase north of the intersection with CR 204, with mainly tree damage noted north of that location. The tornado finally lifted just north of the intersection of CR 57 and 109.

Tornado Report Description: A strong tornado tracked from Etowah into DeKalb County producing damage of EF-2 intensity. Just south of where CR 4 and 450 meet, a manufactured home was completely destroyed. The undercarriage was so badly mangled and twisted up, it was nearly unrecognizable. Trees were also debarked at this location.||Where CR 4/450 and 455 meet, a single-story home was heavily damaged and shifted off its foundation. Nearly the entire roof was lifted. The tornado continued to produce damage as it tracked northeast, crossing CR 25. The tornado was at least 1/4 mile wide at this point with noticeable damage seen along CR 4 (east of the center track) and CR 455 (west of the track). The tornado then took a slight jog to the north and crossed CR 457 and 29 where several homes sustained significant loss of roof covering/shingles and trees were either snapped or uprooted. The tornado appeared to enter a weakening phase at this point. On the west side of the track, a small farm outbuilding collapsed and a large oak tree fell on top of a home along CR 29. Trees were either uprooted or snapped along CR 1920. The tornado crossed CR 4 again (just north of CR 1920) and approached the higher terrain/ridgetop area west of Dugout and Little Sand Valley. Trees were seen snapped or uprooted. A barn was destroyed along CR 4, just south of Coal Creek. The tornado had narrowed significantly by this point but was still producing winds between 80-90 mph.||Nearing the end of its life, the tornado crossed Highway 227 over the higher terrain, snapping and uprooting a narrow corridor of trees. Just north of highway 227, along CR 12 just north of Hayes Gap, additional trees were snapped. No additional/definitive damage was seen north of this location, so the tornado is believed to have lifted in the higher terrain just north of CR 12 and west of CR 221 in southern DeKalb County, about 4 miles southeast of Crossville.

Tornado Report Description: The tornado continued from Jackson into DeKalb County south of Higdon. Most of the damage observed was to trees, with multiple trees uprooted or snapped along the tornado path. The most significant damage occurred along CR 155 near the intersection of CR 823. In this area, minor roof damage and underpinning damage was observed at several mobile homes. One single family house along CR 155 sustained more significant roof, carport, and siding damage. The tornado continued to move northeast, causing additional damage to homes, outbuildings, and one church.

Tornado Report Description: A brief but strong tornado with wind speeds up to 125 mph touched down at the Jet Polymer Plant off of Gault Avenue about 4 miles north-northeast of the town of Fort Payne in central DeKalb County. The tornado flipped 3 large tractor trailers, one of which was vaulted into the air, landing on top of the plant's roof. Adjacent to the plant, across a parking lot, a medium sized metal building structure had much of its metal siding removed and roof uplifted. Also, the column anchorage was severely bent and failed. The tornado continued its track northeast, snapping and uprooting medium to large trees.||Beyond this point, the tornado appeared to skip along its track (litlte to no damage seen), before doing significant structural damage to several homes along Green Valley Circle. One person experienced minor injuries (lacerations) at one of the homes in this location. Two single-family well constructed residences sustained a complete loss of roof material and a collapse of at least two exterior walls (mainly around the garage areas). Numerous trees surrounding the properties were snapped or uprooted. In addition, one small and one medium sized shed were completely destroyed. This area appeared to be where the tornado was at its strongest (Peak Winds: 125 mph/EF-2 rating). Other nearby homes in the neighborhood along Green Valley Circle sustained mainly loss of roof shingles, siding panels, and broken windows.||Just up the hill from this location, a small apartment complex was hit. Partial uplift of the roof occurred at this location. Also nearby, a small apartment complex was hit, where partial uplift of the roof, loss of siding, and broken windows were seen at this two story apartment complex. Other smaller buildings had just minor roof damage, with small trees snapped off, and small branches broken off of trees. The tornado continued northeast along its short track and appeared to quickly weaken and eventually lift near the intersection of 55th Street and Martin Avenue, but not before causing partial roof loss to a home. At this location, plastic fencing around a pool was knocked out and several trees were snapped about halfway down. Debris was also noticed littering the area, seemingly deposited by the tornado as it diminished.

Tornado Report Description: A tornado tracked east from Marshall County along County Road 381. The tornado struck the Kilpatrick community along County Road 479 injuring 7 residents of mobile homes. Very large hardwood trees were snapped near the base. Numerous power poles were snapped at the base. Several mobile homes sustained significant damage with at least two completely destroyed. Several convectional homes sustained minor to moderate exterior damage in this area as well. At this location, the tornado was at its maximum width (220 yards) and intensity (estimated winds of 125 mph). The tornado continued to move east producing substantial damage to a large livestock building near the intersection of Highways 68 and 168. Metal from the roof that was damaged at the Sand Mountain Stockyards was blown down the road for around a mile. The convenience store at that point suffered minor roof damage. A semi truck pulling a trailer on Alabama 168 from the Family Dollar store chain was knocked onto its side by the high winds. The tornado continued to parallel Highway 68. A car wash sustained significant structural damage. A mobile home was flipped and destroyed near the intersection of Highway 68 and County Road 9004. The tornado narrowed and lifted near the intersection of Highway 68 and County Road 113.

Tornado Report Description: A tornado touched down along County Road 539 north of County Road 50 in the Fyffe and Shiloh communities. Minor tree damage was noted in this area. An unoccupied chicken house also sustained damage. Near the intersection of County Roads 50 and 43, a restaurant sustained roof damage and a carport was flattened. Further east, another large farm building sustained major damage. Along Highway 50, additional chicken houses were damaged or destroyed along with trees snapped and uprooted.||The most significant damage occurred along Traylor Street just north of Highway 50/Grove Oak Road. Two large, well constructed, farm buildings were completely destroyed. One of these contained metal trusses and the posts were ripped out of the ground. Debris was thrown several hundred yards and large debris was embedded into the ground. A nearby home sustained minor structural damage. The path widened to 350 yards with estimated maximum wind speeds of 120 mph. The tornado began to narrow and weaken as it moved further east as it crossed County Roads 523 and 578. The tornado lifted near County road 72/Tumlin Road norht of Highway 75.

Tornado Report Description: A significant tornado of EF-2 intensity with peak winds up to 120 mph tracked through southeast DeKalb County. The tornado first touched down along Dogtown Road (County Road 89) just south of Jennings Road where two small barns collapsed. The tornado then crossed Jennings Road and snapped and uprooted trees along Bear Creek Road and Adamsburg Road. A large number of trees were snapped or uprooted along Kelly Road and a barn sustained damage along McCurdy Drive.||The tornado began to strengthen rapidly as it approached Wallace Avenue (State Highway 35). A large metal farm building was leveled to the ground here and 4 power poles were snapped off completely. In this area, the tree damage was substantial. The damage was deemed to be EF-2 intensity at this location. A home on the north side of Highway 35 sustained damage and trees were also downed along Patricia Drive. The tornado continued to move northeast uprooting and snapping a large number of trees along Pumpkin Center Road. Trees were knocked down on several homes just west of the intersection of Pumpkin Center Road and Fischer Road. Minor damage was noted to homes on the east side of Fischer Road as the tornado began to lift.

Tornado Report Description: A violent long track tornado began in the Lakeview community northeast of Geraldine before tracking northeastward, generally parallel to and just east of State Route 75. Along this line, the tornado passed through Fyffe, Rainsville, Sylvania, and eventually into northern DeKalb County south of the Cartersville community, killing 25 people. On the first day of surveys, the survey team noticed initial damage in the Lakeview community where the path width was generally around 50 yards. This initial damage included mostly felled and snapped trees and structural damage to small buildings. Extensive damage was noted especially in Rainsville and Sylvania where the path width was estimated to over 1/2 mile wide. Damage in Rainsville included houses that were completely removed from foundations, with debris scattered for about one mile. Near this location, trees were debarked and a few mobile homes were completely destroyed, with debris strewn for about a mile downstream.||A narrow corridor of intense damage extended from Skaggs Road to Lingerfeldt Road (also known as County Road 180), extending toward County Road 514. Along Skaggs Road, a stone house was completely obliterated with much of the interior debris strewn well away from the structure. A supporting large cement stone pillar was ripped completely out of the ground. Another home along Skaggs Road was also leveled completely to the ground. The NOAA overflight showed significant ground scarring in this area and a walk through the nearby fields showed large pot marks and other sections of disturbed ground. ||Slightly northeast along Lingerfeldt Road, numerous homes were leveled completely to their foundation with vehicles and debris strewn for hundreds of feet. Overhead photos and follow-up visual confirmation revealed a mangled vehicle tossed well into a ravine and resting up in the remainder of trees. At 1608 Lingerfeldt Road/County Road 180, a large two story brick home was completely obliterated with several of the supporting anchors ripped of the ground. A concrete porch was ripped off with pieces strewn up to 150 yards. A section of the asphalt driveway was pulled up. In addition, an anchored liberty safe weighing 800 pounds was pulled off its anchorage and thrown into a wooded area 600 feet away. When found, the safe's door had been ripped open and completely off. A large pick-up truck at this residence was found mangled in pieces over 250 yards away in the same wooded area. The residents of the home survived in a nearby storm pit. Of note, the storm pit was partially exposed by the tornado with dirt being sucked up and pulled away around the opening. Next door, a mobile home was completely disintegrated. The residents of the mobile there also survived in a storm pit. The section of damage from Skaggs Road to Lingerfeldt Road near the intersection with Crow Lane was deemed to be EF-5 intensity. Severe damage with high end EF-4 damage was noted in a corridor from County Road 515 through a neighborhood along County Road 441. In the east and south ends of the neighborhood, many one and two story homes were leveled to their foundation with debris scattered some distance. Several cars were thrown a large distance in this area. There was evidence of ground scarring as well as some sidewalk pavement pulled up in this location. However, some of the homes in this area appeared to be pushed off their foundation initially with limited anchorage. ||In the Sylvania community, similar situation occurred with houses completely removed from foundations and debris blown far downstream. Some of these houses were connected to their foundations with anchor bolts and foundation straps, indicating a stronger construction of the homes. ||Tornado damage continued from the Blake community, intersecting County Road 27, running parallel between State Highway 75 and Interstate 59 through Henager, Ider, to south of Cartersville. ||In the Blake community, the tornado path width was estimated to be one half to three quarters of a mile. Along County Road 27 just southeast of Sylvania, significant damage was observed . All exterior and interior walls of several homes were completely destroyed with partial block and mortar foundations remaining. In one instance, a concrete slab that served as a porch was displaced a few feet and broken in half. Some hardwood trees in the area were stripped with no stubs of any branches remaining and were partially debarked. The Mountain View Baptist Church sustained significant damage. An old, one-story portion of the church dating back to 1902 and constructed of a brick and mortar exterior on wood frame walls was completely destroyed. A recent two-story addition to the church was constructed in 2004 and consisting of similar building materials was partially destroyed, with most exterior walls and nearly all interior walls fallen. A concrete block and mortar foundation was all that remained of a hallway adjoining the two buildings.

Tornado Report Description: A violent tornado continued its wide path of violent destruction across the northern tip of DeKalb County in the Shiloh community. The tornado killed 6 people in this area (12 total along its path across Jackson and DeKalb counties). Several cinder block foundation homes and mobile homes were completely destroyed or swept away. In addition, thousands of large trees were sheared off toward the base. An older two-story and fairly well-built log cabin home was destroyed. The top story of this home was lifted off, moved about 20 yards and twisted 180 degrees. The lower story collapsed and was shifted off its foundation. A senior citizen van was lofted and dropped into a field nearly 400 yards away. At least 3 chicken barns collapsed with a high loss of livestock noted. The tornado crossed into Dade County Georgia with a 1/4 to 1/2 mile wide path along County Road 155 north of Highway 75.

Tornado Report Description: A tornado of EF-1 intensity producing wind speeds of up to 110 mph tracked out of Jackson County and took a short path into DeKalb County. Details are limited with this tornado path as later this same day, a violent tornado of EF-4 intensity struck the same area in a similar path making it very difficult to distinguish damage between the two tornadoes.

Tornado Report Description: A tornado producing damage of EF-1 intensity with peak winds of up to 100 mph touched down near Mentone. The tornado first touched down west of County Road 89 north of downtown Mentone. The tornado moved along a ridge line uprooting many softwood and hardwood trees and snapping them sporadically. The tornado eventually straddled the road further north partially removing a roof to a residence and snapping numerous trees in this area. The tornado lifted about a mile shy of the Georgia state line.

Tornado Report Description: The tornado touched down very briefly in the Henagar area and tracked northward. |Numerous large trees, some old oak trees, were snapped. Other large trees were uprooted as well along this portion of the track in DeKalb County.
