Wind Report Description: Severe thunderstorms moved across parts of eastern New York ahead of a strong cold front during the afternoon of July 26th. Thunderstorm winds as high as 80 mph downed thousands of trees which fell on homes, vehicles, and powerlines. In Saratoga County alone 20,000 customers were left without electricity. Among the hardest hit areas were Greenfield Center, Wilton, Northumberland, Saratoga Springs, and Fort Miller. At the Saratoga Spa State Park some 1,500 trees were uprooted or damaged. Some of the trees fell on cars and on the grounds of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center forcing cancellation of a concert. In Greenfield Center extensive damage occurred at the Utters Mobile Estates where at least five mobile homes sustained significant damage when trees fell on them. In Fort Miller dozens of trees were uprooted or snapped off with some of the trees falling on homes while in Argyle a mobile home was flipped over. Torrential rains during the storms resulted in urban flooding in Amsterdam, Saratoga Springs, Fort Edward, and Fort Miller. Lightning was also a problem as a farmer and his daughter were injured when struck by lightning while on a farm tractor in Northumberland and a horse was struck and killed by lightning in Chatham.
