Tornado Report Description: *** 1 FATAL... 2 INJ *** A SEMI-DISCRETE SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORM BEGAN TO EXHIBIT ROTATION OVER DELAWARE COUNTY... PA AROUND 5:15 PM ON SEPTEMBER 1. THE ROTATION CONTINUED NORTH-NORTHEAST INTO MONTGOMERY COUNTY... AND EVENTUALLY STRENGTHENED ENOUGH TO PRODUCE A TORNADO. MINOR TREE DAMAGE WAS FIRST OBSERVED ALONG STENTON AVE IN FORT WASHINGTON IN THE AREA OF THE PHILADELPHIA CRICKET CLUB. A PATH OF TREE DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED HEADING NORTHEAST ALONG JOSHUA RD AND THROUGH FORT WASHINGTON STATE PARK. SOME MINOR SHINGLE AND SIDING DAMAGE TO HOUSES WAS ALSO SEEN. WHAT STARTED AS A FAIRLY QUIET DAY FOR OUR CWA QUICKLY BECAME BUSY AS NIGHT FELL. AS A VELOCITY COUPLET FORMED ACROSS MONTGOMERY COUNTY... A TORNADO FORMED ROUGHLY A MILE AND A HALF SOUTH OF SOUDERTON... PA AROUND 12:25 AM EDT... WHERE IT BROUGHT DOWN A TREE BRANCH AND TORE SIDING OFF OF A RESIDENCE ON GARRISON LANE. FROM THERE... THE TORNADO APPEARS TO HAVE LIFTED BRIEFLY BEFORE BRINGING DOWN A FEW SMALL TREES AND BRANCHES ALONG TOWNSHIP LINE ROAD. THE TORNADO THEN BROUGHT DOWN SEVERAL TREES AND BRANCHES IN THE HIDDEN SPRINGS MOBILE HOME COMMUNITY. HERE... SEVERAL TREES WERE BROUGHT DOWN ON HOMES AND ACROSS ROADWAYS WHILE ALSO LEADING TO MINOR DAMAGE TO THE ROOFS AND SIDING OF SEVERAL RESIDENCES IN THE COMMUNITY. AS THE TORNADO CROSSED THE PARKWAY... TWO SMALL TREES WERE UPROOTED ON ITS NORTHBOUND SIDE. OUTDOOR WOODEN PICNIC BENCHES AND TABLES AT THE TEXAS ROADHOUSE RESTAURANT WERE PICKED UP AND TOSSED A FEW HUNDRED FEET... BREAKING THE FRONT WINDOW OF THE NEARBY BUT NOW SHUTTERED NOBORU RESTAURANT. Tornado Report Description: AN EF0 TORNADO OCCURRED IN WORCESTER TOWNSHIP IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY... PENNSYLVANIA AS TROPICAL STORM ISAIAS MOVED NORTHWARD ALONG THE EAST COAST OF THE UNITED STATES. WITH SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA BEING IN THE NORTHEASTWARD... RIGHT FRONT QUADRANT... THE TORNADO AND PARENT STORM MOVED IN AN UNUSUAL NORTHWESTWARD TRAJECTORY AHEAD OF THE MAIN CENTER OF THE TROPICAL STORM. THE TORNADO CONTINUED ITS NORTHWESTWARD TRAJECTORY THROUGH THE TOWNSHIP... DOWNING TREES ALONG POTSHOP ROAD. THE CIRCULATION MAY HAVE LIFTED WITH THE PATH BEING SOMEWHAT DISCONTINUOUS. Tornado Report Description: An F1 tornado touched down along the Lower Merion Township side of the Narberth Borough/Lower Merion Township line. The tornado then proceeded east into Narberth Borough and remained on the ground for three-quarters of a mile. Wind damage was mainly whole trees and wires that were knocked down. More than 100 whole trees were knocked down. Dozens of homes were damaged by fallen trees. One tree fell through one house in Narbrook Park. The parent thunderstorm produced straight line wind damage in Delaware County and southwestern parts of Lower Merion Township before the tornado formed near North Wynnewood Avenue. The tornado proceeded into Narberth Borough along Windsor Avenue before lifting. A state of emergency was declared in Lower Merion Township as five major roads were closed including most of County Line Road. Downed wires temporarily children in a school bus. They were not injured. A tree fell on the SEPTA Regional Rail R5 train as it was leaving the Wynnewood Station. The unharmed passengers were removed from the train. Service was suspended for several hours. The path length of the tornado was about three-quarters of a mile and its path width was about 100 yards. The maximum estimated wind speed was 75 mph. The preliminary property damage estimate was one million dollars. A few thousand home and businesses lost power. All power was restored by the afternoon of the 24th.

Tornado Report Description: A severe thunderstorm caused wind damage in downtown Norristown. As the storm was exiting Norristown, it dropped a tornado (F1 estimated winds 80 mph) between High and Tremont Streets. The tornado proceeded east into Plymouth Township and lifted around the Plymouth Country Club. Nevertheless, damaging wind gusts associated with the severe thunderstorm continued along a east path until the Germantown Pike. The worst damage in Norristown was inflicted upon the Curren Terrace Apartment Complex as a piece of the roof was removed. Two dozen residents of the complex were evacuated from the damaged building. Several other houses, mainly in Norristown, had structural damage to their roofs and chimneys. Two were rendered structurally unsound. The remaining damage was inflicted upon trees which were sheared and toppled. Streets which reported the most damage included DeKalb, Elm and Hamilton in Norristown and Graves, Nursery Drive Sandy Hill, Thomas and Walnut Lane in Plymouth. No injuries were reported. The severe thunderstorms throughout Montgomery County caused 17,000 homes to lose electricity.

Tornado Report Description: ,,,,,,,,Lightning A F1 (Fujita Scale) tornado touched down in the Brandywine Village/Lafayette Park area of Upper Merion Township on Allendale Road just to the north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 276). The tornado sighting was phoned into the National Weather Service by a SKYWARN Spotter. The tornado stayed on the ground for about one mile before lifting around Crossfield Road. Most of the wind damage was downed or snapped (40 to 50) trees. The bulk of the uprooted trees were either in poor health or very old. Two houses were damaged by trees falling on them. The worse one sustained about $6,000 in damage to its roof, porch, upstairs bathroom and gutters. The tornado touched down within one mile of the King of Prussia Mall. No injuries were reported. This was the 12th confirmed tornado in the Greater Philadelphia Metropolitan Area this year. Elsewhere in Montgomery County damaging winds knocked over a centerfield fence and uprooted between 12 and 18 trees in Upper Gwynedd Township. A lightning strike ignited a fire in an Upper Gwynedd house. It apparently entered through the electrical box and started a fire in the basement. Damage was estimated between $25,000 and $30,000. Thunderstorm winds uprooted a large pear tree in Audubon. Frequent lightning resulted in power outages to 55,000 Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO) customers throughout their service area.

Tornado Report Description: The parent thunderstorm that produced two tornadoes and downburst wind damage in eastern Chester County split in two near Spring City in Chester County. The left or western thunderstorm entered Montgomery County in Royersford and wind related damage intensified as the thunderstorm moved northeast through Royersford. Most of the damage (collapsed porches and downed trees) in Royerstown occurred from Fifth Avenue to Lewis Road and from Main to Chestnut Streets Several homes were damaged by falling trees. Lewis Road was closed for two days because of tree removal. From police and eyewitness reports apparently a funnel cloud was working its way toward the ground over Royersford and became a tornado in Limerick just to the northeast of Linfield Road at 10:45 pm EST. The tornado intensified into a strong (F3 on the Fujita Scale) one as it paralleled Limerick Road on its western side. A development called "The Hamlet" was in the direct path of this tornado. The Hamlet was a new development started within the past 2 years and about 30 of the planned 430 units were occupied or under construction. The development took a direct hit from the tornado. This resulted in 3 deaths (the same family) and 25 injuries. Of the 27 inhabited houses, 4 were leveled, 16 were damaged beyond repair, 1 under construction was destroyed and only 7 remained liveable. Damage in this development alone was $2 million. The family of three which lost their lives lived on Victory Way. They were asleep and blown out of their house. The father was found on the front lawn. The mother and her 10-month-old daughter were found over a sewer grate. A United States Savings Bond in the child's name was found the next day in Bath, Pennsylvania. Bath is located about 50 miles northeast in Northampton County. Another man was blown through the second story window of his house about 50 feet into the family room of his neighbor's house and survived. Equally miraculous a 5-month-old infant sailed out of his crib onto the front lawn of his home and survived. As tragic as the devastation was at "The Hamlet", it was not the only place in Limerick to sustain damage. As the tornado traveled through the business area of the town, it leveled most of the Hide and Seek Storage Sheds (damage estimated at $1 million). It peeled part of the roof off the Limerick Diner. None of the 30 patrons inside were injured. The Atlantic and Sunoco Gas Stations sustained major damage. Gasoline pumps at the Sunoco Station were wrenched from their cement foundation. An overturned beige truck lay about 200 yards from where it was parked. Even the Limerick Fire House sustained about $25,000 in wind damage. In addition to "The Hamlet", 14 other homes in Limerick sustained major damage. About 90 persons in Limerick had to find temporary shelter. Total damage in Limerick alone was estimated between $5 and $5.5 million. The tornado lifted in the Limerick Garden of Memories Cemetery, but its parent thunderstorm continued to produce wind related damage in upper (northwestern) Montgomery County. Downed trees were reported in Zieglersville. In Marlboro Township about 50 to 60 trees were uprooted on Swamp Creek and Miller Roads. About 10 properties were damaged by the falling trees, including one house that had six trees on top of it. A lightning ignited fire extensively damaged a West Marlborough home.
