Hail Damage Risk for Your Home+
Hail reports describe hail by diameter, often comparing stone size to familiar objects like peas, quarters, golf balls, and softballs. Use this guide as a starting point for possible hail damage to your roof, siding, gutters, vents, windows, and exterior. Actual hail damage depends on hail hardness, density, wind speed, impact angle, roof age, shingle condition, roof pitch, roofing material, installation quality, and prior storm damage.
Pea
0.25″
Low
Usually too small to cause hail damage to most sound asphalt roofs, siding, or gutters.
Mothball
0.50″
Sub-Severe Watch
Below the NWS severe-hail threshold, but not always harmless. Repeated small hail can scuff surfaces, wear aging shingles, and loosen protective granules over time.
Penny
0.75″
Minor / Watch
Below the NWS severe-hail threshold, but roof hail damage is still possible on older, brittle, poorly installed, or previously damaged shingles. May also mark screens, vents, gutters, and soft metal.
Nickel
0.88″
Minor / Watch
Still below the severe-hail threshold, but large enough to leave visible marks on soft metal and add wear to older or hail-weakened roof shingles.
Quarter
1.00″
Watch
The NWS severe-hail threshold. Quarter-size hail can bruise shingles, dent soft metal, and create roof hail damage worth checking.
Half Dollar
1.25″
Watch
More likely to dent gutters, vents, flashing, and siding. Hail damage risk rises quickly on older roofs or hail-weakened shingles.
Ping Pong / Walnut
1.50″
Likely
Hail damage becomes more likely, including bruised shingles, granule loss, dented siding, and damaged roof vents.
Golf Ball
1.75″
Likely
Often causes roof hail damage, cracked shingles, dented gutters, damaged flashing, and siding impacts. A roof inspection is recommended.
Hen Egg
2.00″
Serious
Can crack or puncture shingles, expose mat, dent siding, and cause widespread hail damage across the roof and exterior.
Tennis Ball
2.50″
Serious
Can cause heavy roof hail damage, punctured siding, broken skylights, damaged vents, and widespread exterior damage.
Baseball
2.75″
Major
Major hail damage is likely, including severe roof impacts, damaged siding, broken windows, and possible major roof repairs.
Tea Cup / Large Apple
3.00″
Major
Can cause heavy hail damage across the roof, siding, gutters, windows, and exterior. Significant repairs are often needed.
Softball
4.00″
Extreme
Destructive hail damage. Can severely damage roofing materials, siding, windows, gutters, vents, vehicles, and exterior surfaces.
Grapefruit
4.50″
Extreme
Catastrophic hail damage risk for roofs, windows, vehicles, siding, gutters, and exterior surfaces.
Source: NOAA / National Weather Service hail size references are used for hail-size comparisons and the 1.00″ severe-hail threshold. Damage descriptions are general homeowner guidance, not official NOAA/NWS damage ratings. Sub-severe hail under 1.00″ is below the severe threshold, but that does not mean “no roof damage.” Penny- to nickel-size hail can still contribute to granule loss, cosmetic surface marks, and added wear, especially on older, brittle, poorly installed, or previously damaged roofs.

Kent County · 395 Homes in County
Wind Report Description: Similar to an earlier supercell in Floyd and Crosby Counties, intense downburst winds in the rear flank downdraft created prolonged and widespread destructive winds in northeast Kent County. These winds were likely enhanced by a strong mesocyclone that earlier was tornadic in southeast Dickens County. A Texas Tech University West Texas mesonet located one mile SSE of Jayton recorded 20 consecutive minutes of severe wind gusts ranging from 59 mph to 92 mph! In Girard and Jayton, scattered structural damage was commonplace and at least one trailer was completely destroyed. At least one home in Girard lost a portion of its roof, but damage to most homes in Girard and Jayton was less severe and consisted of shingle loss, damage to siding, cracked or shattered windows, and toppled fences. Several trees were damaged; one of which totaled a car in Jayton after landing directly on the vehicle. Damage to area farm and ranch land consisted of toppled center pivots and large storage tanks. Power outages were common as several dozen power poles were snapped. Fortunately, no injuries occurred during this extended bout of destructive winds; however, damage to some homes was compounded by heavy rains entering damaged roofs and cracked windows resulting in water damage to carpets, walls and furniture. A NWS storm survey the following day in Girard and Jayton uncovered classic divergent debris patterns associated with downbursts. Monetary losses are estimated at this time and may rise once insurance figures become available.

Tornado Report Description: Multiple public and law enforcement reports of a tornado were well corresponded to an intense radar-derived tornadic vortex signature just southwest and west of Girard shortly after 21:00 CST. One public report indicated that a family heard a loud roar as the tornado passed near their home four miles southwest of Girard. Despite multiple witnesses, a post-storm National Weather Service survey found no damage in the area which is predominantly open mesquite-covered range land.

Tornado Report Description: An intense Doppler radar indicated low-level circulation developed within the southwestern flank of an evolving convective complex over remote areas of northwestern Kent County shortly after 20:30 CST. No visual observations of a tornado were received. A post-storm National Weather Service survey, however, discovered tumble weeds and other vegetative debris suspended in utility wires just south of Farm to Market Road 2320 and east of that roadways intersection with Farm to Market Road 1081, approximately eleven miles northwest of Clairemont. This evidence of a localized wind event was consistent with survey observation where a well-documented tornado crossed a major U.S. highway in northwestern Lubbock County earlier in the evening, and is well correlated to the intense radar derived tornadic vortex signature. Event time is estimated per radar.
Tornado Report Description: The previously tornadic supercell that impacted Justiceburg (southeastern Garza County) continued to move northeastward into western Kent County. A local rancher interviewed during a post-storm National Weather Service survey witnessed a brief tornado in open ranch land. The tornado occurred immediately south of U.S. Highway 380 and just east of the Garza and Kent County line. No damage was reported, but the rancher reported hearing a loud roar as the tornado passed.

Tornado report for Kent County, TX
Kent County · 395 Homes in County
Tornado Report Description: The National Weather Service in Lubbock, TX conducted a damage survey in Kent County, approximately 8 miles to the northeast of Clairemont. In collaboration with the Center for Severe Weather Research in Boulder, CO and Texas Tech University meteorologists assessing the tornadoes across the county with Doppler-On-Wheels (DOW) data, a better understanding of the wind fields and tornado timing was achieved. The area of assessed damage was bounded by a triangle comprised of FM2320 to the south, FM1228 to the east, and CR112 to the west. There was a damage path characterized by tree damage across the zone. The path of the damage was oriented from a northeast-east to southwest-west direction. DOW data confirmed the large, wedge tornado initially propagated to the east and northeast, became nearly stationary, then rotate southward around the west side of the parent mesocyclone. The tornado moved to the southwest, then south and crossed FM1228 from the north/northeast to the south/southwest. The path of the tornado was between 0.6 to 0.7 miles wide. In assessing the damage, a circulatory patter was evident in a wheat field owned by a private farmer, with all of the wheat laying down to the south. Along this quadrant of the circulation, large farm equipment (tractors and cotton trailers) were tossed and mangled. An 80,000 lb box car was shaken by the tornado and the associated strong wind but was not moved from its location, however the contents inside were disturbed. The farm vehicles were tossed briefly a few times as there were scar marks and impact marks in the field as the equipment was blown to the south. The front-end of one tractor was snapped off after the second impact with the ground, as the vehicle was likely too heavy to remain airborne and was dragged and rolled by the tornadic wind and circulation. On the east side of the circulation, there were tree branches not grown in that immediate area that were stripped clean of bark. A cotton trailer (lighter than the other equipment) was lifted from its original location and was tossed to the north and mangled upon impact. The equipment was tossed approximately 3/10 of a mile within the circulation. It was evident from the damage pattern and debris, the circulation was multi-vortex in nature. The DOW measured wind speeds ranging from 45, 65 and 90 meters per second at various stages of the tornado life cycle at heights between 3 and 50 meters above ground level.

Tornado Report Description: Spotter, storm chasers, and off-duty National Weather Service personnel reported tornadoes in Floyd County. At least two brief tornadoes knocked down power poles near the town of South Plains. As the parent storm moved southeast, a much stronger tornado developed about seven miles northwest of Dougherty. This tornado, possibly one-quarter mile wide, crossed Highway 62 at 1536 CST and ended about six miles south of Dougherty around 1555 CST. It snapped 400 wooden power poles and twisted/toppled 15 large steel power poles. A shed, barn, and poorly constructed house were destroyed three miles west of Dougherty. A barn and carport were damaged in Dougherty, and another house east of Dougherty suffered 37 broken window panes (due to hail). A farm about six miles south of Dougherty suffered extensive damage. Two large barns were destroyed there, and farm vehicles that were stored in the barns were damaged. A grain storage bin was tossed 100 yards into a nearby field and destroyed. Wood fragments and pieces of tine were thrown across a one-half mile stretch of an adjacent field. One piece of a 2 by 4 plank penetrated a tire. Large center pivot irrigation systems were twisted and over-turned a few miles southwest of Dougherty. This damage was documented by National Weather Service personnel during a storm survey. The same supercell storm moved southeast and caused brief tornadoes near McAdoo, Dickens, Aspermont, and Jayton. An upper level disturbance moving to the southeast in the northwesterly flow aloft helped trigger all the storms.

Tornado Damage Risk for Your Home+
After a tornado, the National Weather Service assigns an EF rating from EF0 to EF5 based on surveyed damage. The rating estimates wind speed from what the tornado damaged, so actual damage can vary by construction quality, roof age, garage doors, windows, trees, debris, and how close the home was to the tornado path.
EF0
65–85 mph
Light
Can peel shingles, damage gutters or siding, break tree limbs, and toss loose outdoor items.
EF1
86–110 mph
Moderate
Can strip roof covering, damage exterior doors, break windows, snap trees, and cause heavier siding or gutter damage.
EF2
111–135 mph
Serious
Can tear off large sections of roofing, break or uproot trees, destroy weaker structures, and cause major exterior damage.
EF3–EF5
136+ mph
Severe
Can remove roofs and walls, destroy large portions of homes, toss vehicles, and cause severe to total destruction near the path.
Source: NOAA / National Weather Service. EF ratings are assigned after a post-storm damage survey and are based on observed damage, not a direct measurement at every home.

A storm report showed up near my home in Kent County — does that mean my roof is damaged?
Not necessarily. A storm report only means hail, wind, or a tornado was observed nearby; it does not confirm damage at any specific address, and conditions change from block to block. Check an address-level hail report first, and if it looks significant, find a local pro that serves Kent County and ask about a Remote Hail Inspection before anyone climbs on the roof.
I am buying a home in Kent County — why should I look at its storm history?
Recent hail or wind can leave a roof or exterior with damage that is easy to miss during a walkthrough, and a recent roof replacement is sometimes an insurance job after a storm. Reviewing the storm history for a Kent County address before closing helps you ask informed questions about roof age, past repairs, and any prior claims.
I am selling a home in Kent County — how does this help me?
Knowing the storm history for your address lets you answer buyer questions with confidence, document repairs you have already made, and decide whether a pre-listing roof check is worthwhile. A clear hail history removes a common sticking point during negotiations.
How do I check hail history for a specific Kent County address?
Use the address search to pull a free address-level hail report for any property in Kent County — no phone number or email required. It shows recent hail activity for that address so you know whether a closer roof or exterior review makes sense.
Where does this storm report data come from, and what are its limits?
Storm reports on this page are public reports from storm events across Kent County, TX, sourced from NOAA SPC and NWS Local Storm Reports. They show where hail, wind, or tornado activity was reported in Kent County, but they do not confirm damage at any specific property. Report locations, sizes, and times may be approximate and can vary from what an individual home experienced. For property-specific hail history, use an address-level hail report or contact a participating local professional for a remote hail inspection. Pros inclusion is not an endorsement, and contacting a professional does not confirm damage at any property.
