Wind Report Description: Severe thunderstorms swept across eastern New York ahead of a cold front which moved east from the Great Lakes. There were numerous reports of trees and powerlines down, large hail and one tornado in eastern New York. The tornado touched down in Eagle Bridge in Rensselaer County. It skipped several times along a non-continuous path of 1.5 miles. Damage consisted of removal of slate roofs, tin roofs on barns removed, part of a silo demolished, and numerous trees up to four feet in diameter uprooted and snapped. The same storm which produced the tornado produced straightline winds near Hoosick Falls which downed trees and blew apart the screen at a Drive-In Theater and Hemstreet Park where part of the roof was blown off a house and a tree was blown onto a garage. Other damage from thunderstorm winds included trees which fell on a garage in Schaghticoke and a small chimney blown off a house in Malone. Hail as large as nickels fell in Stillwater and Vorheesville with dime-size hail reported in Colonie. At the Schenectady County Airport winds gusted to 58 mph.

A double-wide mobile home located on Weiss Lake was blown off its foundation and a mobile home in Alexis (9 east of Centre) had the roof blown off. A mobile home lost its roof in strong winds in Sand Rock, about eight miles northwest of Center.

Tornado Report Description: The path of the tornado was intermittent. The tornado touched down northwest of Lafayette just before midnight, and then moved northeast at a forward speed of about 60 mph. The tornado crossed into Carroll County at 1212 EST and then lifted. Eleven single family homes were destroyed, and 17 homes sustained major damage. Seven single family homes sustained minor damage. Thirteen multi-family dwellings were heavily damaged. At the Sagamore Village Estates mobile home park, 64 mobile homes were destroyed or heavily damaged, and 21 mobile homes sustained minor damage. Three additional mobile homes outside the park were also damaged. Two gas stations and a venetian blind factory were heavily damaged. Total property damage was estimated at 3.5 million dollars. An eleven year old girl was killed when the tornado destroyed her house in Pine View Farms, which is adjacent to Sagamore Village Estates. Her 37 year old stepfather was critically injured at their home, and died the next day. A 24-year old male who was working at the Lafayette Venetian Blind factory was killed when the roof collapsed on him. F11P, M37P, M24O.
