Cherokee County · 4,718 Homes in County
Hail Report Description: A cold front moved southeast out of the Dakotas into Iowa during the late afternoon and evening hours. Parameters for severe weather were weak. The instability was there, but moisture, inflow, and shear were marginal. A mesoscale convective system developed over Minnesota during the afternoon hours. As the evening progressed, the storms developed toward the southwest. Eventually the complex overspread about the northeast two thirds of Iowa. Some severe weather was reported with the storms, but it was limited. Dime-size hail fell in the northwest counties of the state. In O'Brien County, golf ball-size hail fell at Sheldon. Some roof damage was reported there. Hail damage to property was minor, however many crops were damaged. Gusty winds were common with the storms, but there were few wind gusts reaching severe criteria. Minor damage was reported in Spencer as winds clocked at 60 mph blew through the city.

Tornado Report Description: Numerous trees were knocked down at their bases intermittently along an easterly track one mile long and 200 yards wide. Along the north flank, trees were snapped off half-way up and some were twisted. National Weather Service investigation determined that an eastward moving microburst was accompanied by a weak tornado that touched down intermittently along its northern flank. The twisted trees displayed evidence of convergence toward a central track. A small gazebo was damaged, but otherwise there was no property damage to houses observed.

Tornado Report Description: A tornado destroyed a chicken coup, chain link fence, and flipped a 1500 pound trailer upside down. The tornado also reportedly held 8 x 10 foot shed in the air for 10 minutes. A witness reported the tornado was not connected to a cloud and appeared to form from nearly clear skies. Perhaps this could better be defined as a land spout.

Tornado Report Description: A weak and short-lived tornado was reported by Cherokee county 911. The tornado was first observed two miles east of Woodstock along Georgia Highway 92 near Bells Ferry Road. The weak tornado skipped east southeast and uprooted several trees along Georgia Highway 92 before receding. One restaurant had its roof peeled off while three homes received roof damage and glass damage from wind blown debris.

Tornado Report Description: Witnesses observed a weak tornado briefly touch down in the historic Barnsley Gardens of northwest Bartow county and uproot 30 to 40 two to three century year old trees. The tornado lifted and touched down again briefly on Hall Station Road, four miles north of Kingston, before dissipating. A few sheds and several large trees were downed on Hall Station Road from the final touchdown.
