Hail Damage Risk for Your Home+
Hail reports describe hail by diameter, often comparing stone size to familiar objects like peas, quarters, golf balls, and softballs. Use this guide as a starting point for possible hail damage to your roof, siding, gutters, vents, windows, and exterior. Actual hail damage depends on hail hardness, density, wind speed, impact angle, roof age, shingle condition, roof pitch, roofing material, installation quality, and prior storm damage.
Pea
0.25″
Low
Usually too small to cause hail damage to most sound asphalt roofs, siding, or gutters.
Mothball
0.50″
Sub-Severe Watch
Below the NWS severe-hail threshold, but not always harmless. Repeated small hail can scuff surfaces, wear aging shingles, and loosen protective granules over time.
Penny
0.75″
Minor / Watch
Below the NWS severe-hail threshold, but roof hail damage is still possible on older, brittle, poorly installed, or previously damaged shingles. May also mark screens, vents, gutters, and soft metal.
Nickel
0.88″
Minor / Watch
Still below the severe-hail threshold, but large enough to leave visible marks on soft metal and add wear to older or hail-weakened roof shingles.
Quarter
1.00″
Watch
The NWS severe-hail threshold. Quarter-size hail can bruise shingles, dent soft metal, and create roof hail damage worth checking.
Half Dollar
1.25″
Watch
More likely to dent gutters, vents, flashing, and siding. Hail damage risk rises quickly on older roofs or hail-weakened shingles.
Ping Pong / Walnut
1.50″
Likely
Hail damage becomes more likely, including bruised shingles, granule loss, dented siding, and damaged roof vents.
Golf Ball
1.75″
Likely
Often causes roof hail damage, cracked shingles, dented gutters, damaged flashing, and siding impacts. A roof inspection is recommended.
Hen Egg
2.00″
Serious
Can crack or puncture shingles, expose mat, dent siding, and cause widespread hail damage across the roof and exterior.
Tennis Ball
2.50″
Serious
Can cause heavy roof hail damage, punctured siding, broken skylights, damaged vents, and widespread exterior damage.
Baseball
2.75″
Major
Major hail damage is likely, including severe roof impacts, damaged siding, broken windows, and possible major roof repairs.
Tea Cup / Large Apple
3.00″
Major
Can cause heavy hail damage across the roof, siding, gutters, windows, and exterior. Significant repairs are often needed.
Softball
4.00″
Extreme
Destructive hail damage. Can severely damage roofing materials, siding, windows, gutters, vents, vehicles, and exterior surfaces.
Grapefruit
4.50″
Extreme
Catastrophic hail damage risk for roofs, windows, vehicles, siding, gutters, and exterior surfaces.
Source: NOAA / National Weather Service hail size references are used for hail-size comparisons and the 1.00″ severe-hail threshold. Damage descriptions are general homeowner guidance, not official NOAA/NWS damage ratings. Sub-severe hail under 1.00″ is below the severe threshold, but that does not mean “no roof damage.” Penny- to nickel-size hail can still contribute to granule loss, cosmetic surface marks, and added wear, especially on older, brittle, poorly installed, or previously damaged roofs.

Tift County · 10,880 Homes in County
Wind Report Description: An irrigation pivot was flipped along Isabella-Nashville Road to the southwest of the beginning of the tornado. More concentrated tree damage was located just east along Salem Church Road as well. Further wind damage was noted in the city of Tifton, mainly to the south and southeast of the tornado damage path. In addition to being slightly south of the trajectory of the tornado, the damage in this area was not continuous, more sporadic, and was in a consistent direction (blown in a general NE direction). Therefore, it was determined that this was likely due to NON-tornadic winds. The damage was most notable from near Old Omega Rd and I-75 east towards the vicinity of Beech Street south of downtown. The damage in these areas mostly consisted of tree limbs snapped off or trees uprooted. There was some metal roofing taken off a building along Beech street as well. A couple street signs were blown down. Winds were estimated at 65-75 mph. Monetary damage was estimated.

Worth County · 5,390 Homes in County
Wind Report Description: Sporadic tree damage occurred across parts of southern Worth County, with a more concentrated area of damage in the southwest part of the county along and just west of Highway 133. Specifically, the more substantial damage was near the following roads near Hwy 133: Toni Lee, Carlton, Chil Redge, and Liberty Hill. The damage extended approximately 1 mile in a north-south direction and 1 mile in a west-east direction, with most debris blown to the northeast. The circular nature of the area of concentrated damage and consistent nature of the directionality of the damage suggests that it was caused by a small downburst known as a microburst. Much of the damage was consistent with wind gusts of 65-70 mph. However, two residences near the intersection of Carlton Rd and Chil Redge Lane received more significant damage. Several large tree limbs were snapped off. Siding was ripped from the homes, as well as some shingles. A metal shed and metal porch overhang had some material removed and strewn downstream as much as 100 yards. Some wood 2x4s were also blown northeast from the shed and one punctured a screened patio. This sort of damage is consistent with peak gusts in the 80-85 mph range. Monetary damage was estimated.

Tornado report for February 21, 2014
Tift County · 10,880 Homes in County
Tornado Report Description: A fairly narrow corridor of damage points began west of Salem Church Rd about 0.8 mi south of Hwy 82 to the WSW of the city of Tifton. In these areas, mainly tree damage was noted with some large tree limbs snapped and a few trees uprooted. This damage path continued ENE into the vicinity of the Little River, before re-emerging just south of (and along) Hwy 82 near some residences and businesses. The first area affected was a neighborhood of manufactured homes centered around a pond along the south side of Highway 82. Tree damage was noted just south of this with some snapped trees and limbs. One home that was sitting on blocks slid off the blocks and was blown approximately 20 feet. Most of the other homes had only minor damage. A chain link fence was blown down to the north on the south side of the pond, while two billboards mounted on wooden poles were blown down to the west right along Highway 82 (north of the pond). The wooden support poles were snapped. This was indicative of a convergent damage pattern associated with a tornado. Just to the east, near the intersection of Hwy 82 and Marshall Drive, two sheds were flipped and blown back to the southwest - further indicating a convergent damage pattern. Other light debris along Highway 82 was blown in a similar direction. The tornado likely then shifted its motion to slightly south of east, and affected several more businesses north of Marshall Drive and south of Highway 82. Security camera footage from a business in this area showed some swirling rain curtains before very low visibility in strong winds prior to a loss of power. A metal building under construction near the intersection of Carpenter Rd and Marshall Dr was damaged and partially collapsed. Because construction was incomplete, it likely made it easier for the wind to cause the structure to fail. As the tornado crossed Carpenter Rd it likely began to dissipate as damage began to get more sporadic further east by Highway 319. There was some tree damage east of Carpenter Rd, and both the Lowe`s and Wal-Mart to the south of Highway 82 indicated they had some minor roof damage with some AC units moved or tipped over. Monetary damage was estimated.

St. Clair County · 27,864 Homes in County
Tornado Report Description: A tornado touched down near Jamaica Lane, west southwest of Branchville, causing minor roof damage to a mobile home and uprooting several small trees. The tornado tracked northeastward and strengthened, with winds of 85 mph, as it neared the intersection of Sanie Road and Nelsie Ann Drive. Six to eight two-story homes sustained minor roof damage as well as 30-50 trees uprooted or snapped. The tornado caused similar damage along Hurst Drive, where 25-40 trees were either snapped or uprooted and a two-story home and barn sustained minor roof damage. The tornado made a turn to the north northeast and tracked parallel to Anderson Mountain, downing trees as it crossed Copper Springs Rd near Dogwood Cir. The tornado turned to the east and continued downing trees as it crossed Shadow Bend Dr and U.S. Highway 411. The tornado track narrowed as it crossed Hwy 411 and Alabama Highway 174. The tornado downed 10-20 trees along Tucker Rd, with one down on a home. The tornado lifted just east of Tucker Road, 0.40 miles north of the intersection of Tucker Rd and Oak Ridge Dr. In addition, there was sporadic damage near the beginning and ending of this tornado path as a result of straight line winds associated with the same thunderstorm. See other event entries for those details.

Tornado report for February 21, 2014
DeKalb County · 21,942 Homes in County
Tornado Report Description: A brief but strong tornado with wind speeds up to 125 mph touched down at the Jet Polymer Plant off of Gault Avenue about 4 miles north-northeast of the town of Fort Payne in central DeKalb County. The tornado flipped 3 large tractor trailers, one of which was vaulted into the air, landing on top of the plant's roof. Adjacent to the plant, across a parking lot, a medium sized metal building structure had much of its metal siding removed and roof uplifted. Also, the column anchorage was severely bent and failed. The tornado continued its track northeast, snapping and uprooting medium to large trees.||Beyond this point, the tornado appeared to skip along its track (litlte to no damage seen), before doing significant structural damage to several homes along Green Valley Circle. One person experienced minor injuries (lacerations) at one of the homes in this location. Two single-family well constructed residences sustained a complete loss of roof material and a collapse of at least two exterior walls (mainly around the garage areas). Numerous trees surrounding the properties were snapped or uprooted. In addition, one small and one medium sized shed were completely destroyed. This area appeared to be where the tornado was at its strongest (Peak Winds: 125 mph/EF-2 rating). Other nearby homes in the neighborhood along Green Valley Circle sustained mainly loss of roof shingles, siding panels, and broken windows.||Just up the hill from this location, a small apartment complex was hit. Partial uplift of the roof occurred at this location. Also nearby, a small apartment complex was hit, where partial uplift of the roof, loss of siding, and broken windows were seen at this two story apartment complex. Other smaller buildings had just minor roof damage, with small trees snapped off, and small branches broken off of trees. The tornado continued northeast along its short track and appeared to quickly weaken and eventually lift near the intersection of 55th Street and Martin Avenue, but not before causing partial roof loss to a home. At this location, plastic fencing around a pool was knocked out and several trees were snapped about halfway down. Debris was also noticed littering the area, seemingly deposited by the tornado as it diminished.

Tornado report for February 21, 2014
Delaware County · 62,479 Homes in County
Tornado Report Description: The tornado touched down on the edge of a field along North Old State Road. A large tree and barn sustained significant damage near the beginning of the path of the tornado. The tornado then moved northeast, crossing North Old State Road. A narrow path of additional tree damage was observed in the front yard of a residence. This home sustained minor damage including a garage door blown in, loss of shingles and a couple of broken windows. A nearby utility pole and transformer were snapped with electric lines also downed. Further along the path of the tornado, a large spruce tree was uprooted, an unanchored storage shed was moved off its foundation, and several other trees were damaged. Based on the damage surveyed, the maximum estimated wind speed of this tornado was 85 miles per hour.
After a tornado, the National Weather Service assigns an EF rating from EF0 to EF5 based on surveyed damage. The rating estimates wind speed from what the tornado damaged, so actual damage can vary by construction quality, roof age, garage doors, windows, trees, debris, and how close the home was to the tornado path.
EF0
65–85 mph
Light
Can peel shingles, damage gutters or siding, break tree limbs, and toss loose outdoor items.
EF1
86–110 mph
Moderate
Can strip roof covering, damage exterior doors, break windows, snap trees, and cause heavier siding or gutter damage.
EF2
111–135 mph
Serious
Can tear off large sections of roofing, break or uproot trees, destroy weaker structures, and cause major exterior damage.
EF3–EF5
136+ mph
Severe
Can remove roofs and walls, destroy large portions of homes, toss vehicles, and cause severe to total destruction near the path.
Source: NOAA / National Weather Service. EF ratings are assigned after a post-storm damage survey and are based on observed damage, not a direct measurement at every home.

How many storm reports were recorded on February 21, 2014?
Our records show 8 hail, 252 wind, and 12 tornado reports on February 21, 2014, compiled from NOAA SPC and NWS Local Storm Reports. The most recent was reported on February 21, 2014.
What was the largest hail reported on February 21, 2014?
The largest hail size in these storm-report records on February 21, 2014 is 1.50″, reported near N Ayden, NC.
Some reports show UNK instead of a wind speed or tornado rating — what does that mean?
Wind reports come three ways: measured from an instrument, estimated from the damage observed, or UNK when no speed was recorded. Tornadoes show UNK until the National Weather Service finishes a damage survey and assigns an EF rating. UNK simply means that value was not available when the report was filed.
A report appeared near my home on February 21, 2014 — is my roof damaged?
Not necessarily. A storm report shows that hail, wind, or a tornado was observed nearby, not that any specific home was hit. To find out whether your property was affected, check an address-level hail report, and if it looks significant, ask a local pro about a Remote Hail Inspection before scheduling roof work.
I am buying or selling a home — how do these on February 21, 2014 reports help?
If a storm passed through, a roof or exterior may have damage that is hard to see, or a recent repair may trace back to it. Buyers can ask better questions before closing, and sellers can document the home condition up front — both starting from the property address rather than a whole region.
How do I check what happened at a specific address on February 21, 2014?
Use the address search to pull a free address-level hail report for any property — no phone number or email required. It shows recent hail activity for that address so you know whether a closer roof or exterior review makes sense.
Where does this storm report data come from, and what are its limits?
Storm reports on this page are public reports from storm events on February 21, 2014 across the United States, sourced from NOAA SPC and NWS Local Storm Reports. They show where hail, wind, or tornado activity was reported, but they do not confirm damage at any specific property. Report locations, sizes, and times may be approximate and can vary from what an individual home experienced. For property-specific hail history, use an address-level hail report or contact a participating local professional for a remote hail inspection. Pros inclusion is not an endorsement, and contacting a professional does not confirm damage at any property.
