Wind Report Description: In Zeigler and Pershing, numerous trees and very large tree limbs were down. Some trees were uprooted. In Zeigler, trees and limbs fell on several houses in town. One large tree fell through a roof, causing extensive damage to the house. At least two other houses sustained extensive roof damage, which allowed rainwater to soak the interiors of the houses. At other houses, the wind caused minor roof damage such as blowing off shingles. Siding was blown off some houses, and gutters were damaged. Roads were blocked by downed tree limbs. The wind was responsible for toppling objects in yards, such as swings and lamp posts. In addition to the wind, witnesses also reported one inch hail in Zeigler, which helped to bring tons of tree leaves to the ground. The wind-blown rain, debris, and hail left many houses with dirt and debris plastered onto them. The sides of some residences and travel trailers were punctured by wind-blown hailstones. The damage found in Zeigler was mainly across the southeast sections of town. The village of Pershing is a small town just west of Interstate 57 and southwest of West Frankfort. All of the damage was caused by a series of downbursts, with winds estimated to be around 65 mph.
