Hail Report Description: The team began the survey along IH-35 near Center Point Road. They noted widespread damage to trees and vegetation beginning near that point and continuing northward to the San Marcos Tanger Outlet Mall and Prime Time Outlet Mall. The damage was caused by a combination of large hail and winds gusting 40 to 50 mph. NWS NEXRAD Radar late Thursday afternoon had indicated severe thunderstorms in that area moving toward the northeast. At the south end of the Malls, the parking lot surface was covered with dents and impressions produced by the wind and hail. Hundreds of vehicles had been damaged in this event but only a few remained in the area. Most of these had all of the window glass broken out with hundreds of hail dents in the car bodies. At this part of the Malls, damage to store signs was seen only on the north and west sides of buildings. There was no damage to signs on the south and east sides. Therefore, the storm winds had propelled the hail toward the southeast. In addition to the sign damage, hundreds of roof tiles had been broken and cracked, and many of these had fallen into the parking lot during the storm. As the team drove northward through the Mall areas, the same type of damage to building signs and roofs as well as parking surfaces was seen. However, at the north end of the Malls, damage to the store signs was confined to the south and west walls of the buildings. In this part of the Malls, the damaging winds had propelled the hail toward the northeast. Thus, the pattern of damage was fan-shaped, with the winds generally blowing the hail toward the west, but with a southeast component of motion on the south end of the Malls and a northeast component of motion on the north end of the Malls. This type of damage is clearly indicative of straight-line winds, also referred to as "downburst winds." One of the NWS staff members was at the Malls during the storm. Dents in his vehicle were 4.25 inches in diameter, indicating that at some of the hail stones were as large as grapefruits. He had estimated windspeeds to be between 60 and 70 mph.The team drove roads in all directions from the Mall areas and concluded that the severe wind and hail had caused the worst damage in an area enclosed by Wonder World Drive, Posey Road, Hunter Road, and FM266 which is also known as Old Bastrop Highway. Other areas of large hail and damaging winds were reported to the NWS, but the level of damage was generally more isolated and less severe.Damages from this storm were estimated at $100M with up to 10,000 vehicles damaged and another 7000 vehicles in homes in the area. Losses to businesses as a result of closing the following day were estimated at $500,000.

Hail Damage Risk for Your Home+
Hail reports describe hail by diameter, often comparing stone size to familiar objects like peas, quarters, golf balls, and softballs. Use this guide as a starting point for possible hail damage to your roof, siding, gutters, vents, windows, and exterior. Actual hail damage depends on hail hardness, density, wind speed, impact angle, roof age, shingle condition, roof pitch, roofing material, installation quality, and prior storm damage.
Pea
0.25″
Low
Usually too small to cause hail damage to most sound asphalt roofs, siding, or gutters.
Mothball
0.50″
Sub-Severe Watch
Below the NWS severe-hail threshold, but not always harmless. Repeated small hail can scuff surfaces, wear aging shingles, and loosen protective granules over time.
Penny
0.75″
Minor / Watch
Below the NWS severe-hail threshold, but roof hail damage is still possible on older, brittle, poorly installed, or previously damaged shingles. May also mark screens, vents, gutters, and soft metal.
Nickel
0.88″
Minor / Watch
Still below the severe-hail threshold, but large enough to leave visible marks on soft metal and add wear to older or hail-weakened roof shingles.
Quarter
1.00″
Watch
The NWS severe-hail threshold. Quarter-size hail can bruise shingles, dent soft metal, and create roof hail damage worth checking.
Half Dollar
1.25″
Watch
More likely to dent gutters, vents, flashing, and siding. Hail damage risk rises quickly on older roofs or hail-weakened shingles.
Ping Pong / Walnut
1.50″
Likely
Hail damage becomes more likely, including bruised shingles, granule loss, dented siding, and damaged roof vents.
Golf Ball
1.75″
Likely
Often causes roof hail damage, cracked shingles, dented gutters, damaged flashing, and siding impacts. A roof inspection is recommended.
Hen Egg
2.00″
Serious
Can crack or puncture shingles, expose mat, dent siding, and cause widespread hail damage across the roof and exterior.
Tennis Ball
2.50″
Serious
Can cause heavy roof hail damage, punctured siding, broken skylights, damaged vents, and widespread exterior damage.
Baseball
2.75″
Major
Major hail damage is likely, including severe roof impacts, damaged siding, broken windows, and possible major roof repairs.
Tea Cup / Large Apple
3.00″
Major
Can cause heavy hail damage across the roof, siding, gutters, windows, and exterior. Significant repairs are often needed.
Softball
4.00″
Extreme
Destructive hail damage. Can severely damage roofing materials, siding, windows, gutters, vents, vehicles, and exterior surfaces.
Grapefruit
4.50″
Extreme
Catastrophic hail damage risk for roofs, windows, vehicles, siding, gutters, and exterior surfaces.
Source: NOAA / National Weather Service hail size references are used for hail-size comparisons and the 1.00″ severe-hail threshold. Damage descriptions are general homeowner guidance, not official NOAA/NWS damage ratings. Sub-severe hail under 1.00″ is below the severe threshold, but that does not mean “no roof damage.” Penny- to nickel-size hail can still contribute to granule loss, cosmetic surface marks, and added wear, especially on older, brittle, poorly installed, or previously damaged roofs.

Wind Report Description: A severe thunderstorm struck just south of the San Marcos Police Headquarters Building near 7:00 am and produced winds estimated at 70 to 80 mph northward along IH-35. At the beginning of the damage path, tin metal roofs were torn off several buildings and tossed several hundred feet. Damage was noted to roofs and eaves as well as walls of some buildings. Typically, all the damage was blown toward the north. These severe winds continued from the initial damage location for approximately one mile to a residential area. All along this path the team saw sections of tin ripped from roofs, with pieces tossed several hundred feet. At one location a large wooden deck was torn from a one-story building. Again, all the debris in this mile-long path was blown in the same direction - toward the north.

Hays County · 64,529 Homes in County
Wind Report Description: A line of thunderstorms formed along a cold front in central Texas and moved quickly southward. As the storms moved through Hays County, they produced a downburst that struck the town of San Marcos and spread southeastward into Caldwell County. An NWS Storm Survey Team reported numerous large tree limbs of diameter from 6 to 12 inches broken or blown over in San Marcos and along the I-35 corridor. Blown over trees and limbs were generally pointed toward a southeast direction. Many business signs and awnings were damaged along with roof damage to several businesses. Metal or tin roof in some businesses was peeled off on the side of the incoming high winds. Based on the damage and its pattern, it appeared that damage was the result of straight line winds indicative of a strong downburst estimated at 60 knots or greater. The strong winds also toppled over a semi truck. At Dudley Johnson Park the winds knocked over portable toilets and blew down numerous trees across the roads. Total damage in the town was estimated at $7 million.

Tornado report for ZIP 78666
Hays County · 64,529 Homes in County
Tornado Report Description: A tornado developed near Centerpoint Rd. and Old Zorn Rd. in Guadalupe County and continued to the north-northeast for approximately 2.25 miles into Hays County ending near Centerpoint Rd. and Viewpoint Rd. The tornado caused minor roof damage to a few homes where it first developed. As it continued north-northeastward, the tornado struck a series of electrical transmission line towers, causing 11 towers to either partially or completely collapse. The tornado continued through an open field near Centerpoint Rd. causing mainly tree damage. Several homes east of Centerpoint Rd., in the Southridge Estates subdivision, received minor roof damage along with large tree limbs snapped. In addition, a garage with an attached apartment completely collapsed in the Southridge Estates subdivision. Peak winds were estimated to be 90-100 mph. One person was injured. At the time of this writing, there is no estimate of insured losses.
Tornado Report Description: Much more severe damage was seen near the center of this path at Police Headquarters. Just south of the building, metal roofs had been torn off a structure and tossed toward the north. In the south parking lot adjacent to the building, three telephone poles were blown down...one toward the westone toward the northand one toward the south. An officer was in his vehicle at 7:08 am CST as the storm struckparked next to a large metal building which partly protected it. The officer reported that very high winds and heavy rain began blowing from north to souththen abruptly changed direction and began blowing from south to northaccompanied by penny-sized hail. His carin spite of being somewhat shelteredwas badly damaged by the blowing debris. In allthirty-five vehicles at the Police Building sustained damagewith numerous dents and large gashes in car bodiesas well as windows and windshields fractured. A large area of brick was ejected from an upper portion of the Buildings north wall. The conclusion of the survey team was that this damage at the Police Headquarters was due to a small and short-lived tornado that occurred just behind the 70 to 80 mph thunderstorm winds. Damage was also found about 200 yards north of the Police Building at a business that manufactures lighting fixtures. This was thought to be a second touchdown of the small tornado. Here a large dumpster was spun almost 360 degrees and several trailers were slammed into each other. A single-wide trailer was tipped over on its side. Windows and doors at the building were broken, with some blown inward and some blown outward. Based on the type and level of damage, the tornado was rated an F1 on the Fujita Scale, and an EF1 on the new Enhanced Fujita Scale. The tornado path was estimated to be 100 yards wide and a three-tenths of a mile long.

Tornado Damage Risk for Your Home+
After a tornado, the National Weather Service assigns an EF rating from EF0 to EF5 based on surveyed damage. The rating estimates wind speed from what the tornado damaged, so actual damage can vary by construction quality, roof age, garage doors, windows, trees, debris, and how close the home was to the tornado path.
EF0
65–85 mph
Light
Can peel shingles, damage gutters or siding, break tree limbs, and toss loose outdoor items.
EF1
86–110 mph
Moderate
Can strip roof covering, damage exterior doors, break windows, snap trees, and cause heavier siding or gutter damage.
EF2
111–135 mph
Serious
Can tear off large sections of roofing, break or uproot trees, destroy weaker structures, and cause major exterior damage.
EF3–EF5
136+ mph
Severe
Can remove roofs and walls, destroy large portions of homes, toss vehicles, and cause severe to total destruction near the path.
Source: NOAA / National Weather Service. EF ratings are assigned after a post-storm damage survey and are based on observed damage, not a direct measurement at every home.

A storm report showed up near my home in ZIP 78666 — does that mean my roof is damaged?
Not necessarily. A storm report only means hail, wind, or a tornado was observed nearby; it does not confirm damage at any specific address, and conditions change from block to block. Check an address-level hail report first, and if it looks significant, find a local pro that serves ZIP 78666 and ask about a Remote Hail Inspection before anyone climbs on the roof.
I am buying a home in ZIP 78666 — why should I look at its storm history?
Recent hail or wind can leave a roof or exterior with damage that is easy to miss during a walkthrough, and a recent roof replacement is sometimes an insurance job after a storm. Reviewing the storm history for a ZIP 78666 address before closing helps you ask informed questions about roof age, past repairs, and any prior claims.
I am selling a home in ZIP 78666 — how does this help me?
Knowing the storm history for your address lets you answer buyer questions with confidence, document repairs you have already made, and decide whether a pre-listing roof check is worthwhile. A clear hail history removes a common sticking point during negotiations.
How do I check hail history for a specific ZIP 78666 address?
Use the address search to pull a free address-level hail report for any property in ZIP 78666 — no phone number or email required. It shows recent hail activity for that address so you know whether a closer roof or exterior review makes sense.
Where does this storm report data come from, and what are its limits?
Storm reports on this page are public reports from storm events in and around ZIP 78666, sourced from NOAA SPC and NWS Local Storm Reports. They show where hail, wind, or tornado activity was reported in ZIP 78666, but they do not confirm damage at any specific property. Report locations, sizes, and times may be approximate and can vary from what an individual home experienced. For property-specific hail history, use an address-level hail report or contact a participating local professional for a remote hail inspection. Pros inclusion is not an endorsement, and contacting a professional does not confirm damage at any property.
